I've had this Pc for 4 years now and am starting to think it could use a bit of an upgrade as a lot of games I've played recently are starting to see major drops in frame rate. I'm looking for any advice in just what I should do from upgrade ideas or whether its better to save my money for now and get a better once down the line in a few years time.
The current specs are
Processor : AMD PHENOM II X4 955 (3.20GHz/8MB CACHE/AM3) - BLACK EDITION
Memory card : 4GB SAMSUNG DDR3 DUAL-DDR3 1333MHz (2 X 2GB)
Graphics Card : 1GB AMD RADEON™ HD6770 - DVI,HDMI,VGA - DX® 11
Operating System : Windows 7

Ehh, you could get by with only upgrading the RAM and GPU.
You'll want an 8 GB kit, preferably at 1600mhz with a CAS latency of 9. (you'll want to throw out the old ram as mixing ram kits causes problems)
And newer GPU will help, like an Nvidia GTX 950 will run about $150-170 and be a good fit for your system.

I upgrade my system in series. Like the video card for one series, motherboard, memory, cpu for another series. Parts like hd, dvd drive, etc i mix and match between those 2 groups a mentioned.

In your case, for example, just upgrade the video card. In maybe 1 to 3 years, upgrade the cpu, reuse the video card. Then you could put off 2-3 years again before upgrading just the video card.
