The r9 380 is better performing card. It consumes some more power but the performance justifies it. You will be much more future proof with the r9 380 than the gtx 960 cause of the bigger memory bus and great dx12 support.
The only con about the r9 380 is the power consumption which is a little more but superior performance than the gtx 960 makes it better. Temperatures are not that of an issue since Sapphire makes really great coolers which keep the temps low even in heavy workloads

The Sapphire version is the way to go for that card.

Check out the 4gb models of the r9 380. those are real cheap now and offer more performance for the money
