What does Les mean on a hard drive?

Hi, first a little background. I work at a small company that sells refurbished computers. About a week ago a customer called complaining about a noisy hard drive. After getting enough information from her It was determined that a replacement hard drive should be sent to her. We shipped her a replacement and thought nothing of it. A few days later we received the hard drive back and contacted the customer asking why she returned it. She said the hard drive wouldn't work with her Optiplex 755 computer because it was an "LES Hard drive." When I asked what she meant by LES, she simply replied with "google it."

The Model for the Hard drive was: HDS725050KLA360

Hey there, killerbeed.

I've looked up the model and this is basically a standard SATA II HDD. I honestly don't think that this means anything. Basically the hard drive might have been faulty, but there's no other reason for that kind of drive not to work with her computer if it was a healthy HDD. Do you think you might have misheard her?

Maybe she said WES hard drive as in a western digital is not compatible with my motherboard. But if she was using lingo such as WES she would know what she was doing and building her own computers.

I'm curious to know what LES means.

Definitely not, I forgot to mention that she didn't even test the replacement hard drive, she says she just saw the words LES on the front and determined that it wouldn't work with her BIOS configuration, because she upgraded it according to her. Furthermore she told us, we need to send her another replacement. When I told her all our hard drives were the same, she told me we need to buy her a Non-LES hard drive from Ebay. For according to her, "they are only 20 dollars." When I told her no, she proceeded to call me a scammer for sending her an LES HDD. Overall I got a "wanna-be tech" vibe from her. I was just hoping someone would know would LES meant. For by looking on the label of the Hitachi hard drives they do in fact say "LES."

When I was speaking with her she said LES such as "L.E.S" not "LESS"

Google comes up with nothing so she lied. Only thing I found was an old Hitachi IDE controller with LES in the model number. Other than that nothing. I'm not sure why she is complaining since Hitachi makes some of the best hard drives on the market. She's an idiot to begin with since she couldn't explain it to you.

I'd keep the hard drive and call it her loss. Let her take you to court. You sent her a replacement and she refused it.

Well I really don't think this has anything to do with the BIOS/UEFI configuration. This is a standard hard drive in my opinion. If you really want to be 100% sure what that means, I'd suggest that you get in touch with the drive manufacturer's customer support and ask about it.
Other than that, I'd recommend that you re-upload the photo with the serial number removed from the picture if the drive is still under warranty, for security reasons. :)

Email support case has been filed with HGST. I checked all the data and spec sheets for these hard drives and found nothing. My guess is something like "Low energy system". Hitachi was known for creating the lowest energy drives on the market to be used in Energy star compliant computers. Maybe the drives labeled LES were for use in Energy Star computers. I could also be totally wrong.

If I get a reply you're going to find out.

I think gondo is onto something... I saw "low energy storage" thrown around places after doing a google search, it wasn't specifically Hitachi drives though. Also if this is correct, I have no idea why it would have any effect on the system... I mean the power consumption is a physical property... not really some compatibility feature...

We get our parts from liquidation auctions, so it definitely isn't under warranty
