Should I build with a LGA 1150 or LGA 1151

I'm building a new gaming PC from ground zero. I was planning on using an LGA 1150 mobo and putting an i7-4790k in it with a gtx 980, and 16 GB RAM, but I have to wonder how much longer those components will last until they need updated.

I guess the question I'm asking is: How long would you estimate before I absolutely HAVE to upgrade to an LGA 1151 mobo with a newer CPU and DDR4 memory? Would it be smarter to get the newer tech now before the PC has been built, or will I be fine with the older stuff?

I don't need to run the toughest games on their max settings (but I sure would like to). As long as I can maintain 1080p and 60 fps, I will probably be happy.

I'd buy the newer platform, the 1151, unless the comparable 1150 parts were 10% or more cheaper. But really, they are both excellent and for gaming your system can't and won't have any difference. But if its gaming you are after, I'd get a i5 instead. No need for the i7.

Are you gaming on a 1080p 60Hz monitor?

Yes,

And going on the 1151 platform, I likely will cut back to an i5 to compensate for the newer motherboard so I don't throw off my planned budget too much.

I know that I wouldn't be pushing an i7 to its full potential, and that's the way I like it. I feel like PC's are one of the areas where over-kill is underrated.
