I have a question about Cherry Keyboard Switches.

I am a software developer and when I'm not programming I'm chatting with friends. (I type 10-14 hours a day)

Which color switch do most typist tend to prefer that are not overly loud?
I guess I am looking for switches for typing vs. gaming.

I already figured out I will buy from these guys unless one you have a reason for me not to.

So it arrived and this is my first impression of it after around 10/15 mins so literally frist impression. I should mention I got a 10 keyless and the spacing feels a little different to my previous keyboard so that may account for some of the mistypes (tried one of the many free online type tests).

So far it feels a little odd and as mentioned there have been some mistypes in part due to a slightly smaller layout but some I think because the keys feel slightly harder to press. That could also be because my membrane was a bit worn in comparrison. The bump of the brown switches makes it feel "slightly" like I'm typing on a membrane because when you hit the bump it's sort of like hitting the top of the dome execpt you've just activated...

Not sure how valid you'll find my opinion as my 1st mechanical is arriving today but I'll share my limited experience from searching.

I think it was more of a headache than it should have been lol as I was comparing so many different boards with each switch. I'm not a hardcore gamer and also probably spend more time typing so I wanted something in between which led me to brown switches. I think you'd find those are what you'd be after too, they don't have the click that blues do so are less audible but do have a tactile bump to let you know when it reaches activation for typing. But on a basic level (most common switches), Blues have a bump and click, Browns just have a bump, Reds are smooth with less pressure for a press and Blacks are also smooth but have a higher tolerance for a press.

I also decided to purchase some O rings to fit onto the keys as I've been using a membrane for so long, I read that people new to mechanicals tend to bottom out the switches to start with (also a sound factor) because muscle memory is telling you to press the key all the way down to activate it.

Have a watch of this; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ps5DEeSBl5s Jay does a good job of explaining each switch. In the video Jay also uses a switch testing keypad thing that you could purchase to try out the different ones before hand. If I wasn't kind of impatient I probably would have gotten one to try out.

The O rings I previously mentioned aren't fitted yet as they didn't arrive in the post, once they arrive I think that will lessen the effect. The switches aren't loud on their own but when you hit the bottom of the keyboard base (bottoming out) it seems louder than the membrane.

Not really sure what to say beyond that but will comment again once I've had a proper chance to get used to it, like anything new it'll just take some getting used too. The one I went for btw is the Cooler Master Quickfire Rapid i.

Now that you've used the keyboard for a while do you have any updates on how you feel about the keyboard?

So sorry, it must have slipped my mind, I meant to reply ages ago.

The keyboard is still going strong. I did install the O rings when they arrived, though it was a bit tedious adding little rubber circles under each cap, but worth it for something you only need to do once, it made some difference to sound. I do seem to type a bit lighter now anyway, so the keys are only going as far as they need to actuate and not bottoming out all the time like when I first got it.

It was my brothers birthday not so long ago and I got him a mechanical with switches equivalent to Cherry reds (I think his has an offbrand custom switch like the kalh), anyway I tried typing on it and preffered the feel of the bump with the browns. His doesn't have O rings and you can hear him clicking away in the next room lol.

Typing is fine now and is slightly better when comparing to the old membrane since the respone is better with mechanicals you can feather the keys up to bump and its on the screen. In the few games I do play the response time did seem to make a little difference being able to get behind cover or activate a skill that bit faster.

I think the differences are enough that I wouldn't like to go back to using a membrane over mechanical despite the cost gap.
