I just got done getting my basic rig set up. To get started I bought a PNY XLR8 240 gig just to get up and running. I have heard alot of suggestions but what I'm thinking about doing now, is just adding another PNY, except my next one will be 480 Gig. So I will have a PNY 240 gig with my OS and my games. Everything else will be on the 480. I could save a lot of money and add extra space if I use a WD - Black - 1 - TB for the storage. So my questions is, do I need a SSD for storage only??? Also, I don't need a ton of room. The last rig I had barley had 150 gigs and I had everything in there, it's like I have thousands of videos to store. I would be suprised if I used more then 100 gigs total!!!

Let me know what you guys think, Thanks Everybody,

Solution
Its down to you what you need, how much you need to store and how quickly you need to access it. I run a 240 SSD and 2TB HDD and it works really well. My problem is with OS, Office, One game and a few little bits my 240gb SSD is 70% full so any more and its going to start slowing down. I keep looking at adding a 500gb

I just do some minimal game playing. BF 4, FC, MW, but I'm also going to install CAD on this rig as I'm going to start doing drawings with our new Fab-Cad program. I honestly do not see myself using more then 250 gigs total. Because I'm just getting started and I just got this thing put together, I just don't have anything but BF 4 on it right now. I'm hearing that because I'm only going to use a couple of hundred gigs of data, most people are telling me to buy another PNY 480 for all of my storage and regular programs, and keep my 240 PNY running my OS and game programs, and of course CAD. For what I'm going to spend on the 480 PNY, I can get a 2 TB WD Black, which I have heard is a pretty fast drive. Everyone I talk to says keep the OS and games on the SSD, and others say only run the OS on my SSD and store everything else on the black??? There is just so many options / configurations it's hard to decide. The WD - Black, 1 TB is 79 bucks, the PNY 480 is 153. So do I need to spend an 80 bucks to keep all SSDs or is the black fast enough??? The truth is, 70 bucks is not really a big deal, but I also need to save as much as I can because I still need my 2nd VC. Would I or could I notice a difference between using the black and the PNY SSD???? If so, then the answer would be spend the extra 70 bucks, and run the 2nd drive as a SSD. Let me know what you think!!!

Thanks Man,

If you want a drive for storage and backups, get a standard drive. No need at all to keep files that you don't need fast access to. You'd want another drive in addition to that anyway for backups, so instead of the one larger SSD, get two 1 TB regular drives, one for overflow of files off your 240 SSD and second for backups.

You wont need a SSD for storage but If your going to be doing serious transferring and video editing then I would use a WD black. If your not going to be doing that and just for storage only then a WD blue or Green 1TB 5400 or 7400RPM will do the job just fine. If you need less then 1TB get a 500GB

In my Ring I have a WD green 2tb 5400 that I use for storage and I watch the videos from windows media center. For my OS/Games/APPS I Use a 240GB Samsung 450 EVO

The only thin I do is play some games, I do try and work from home so I have CAD, Planswift (estimating / take-off software), office, and stuff like that. Another cool thing is I'm only going to have a few games on there. BF 4, CS, MW, I might even go old school and put BF 3 on here, I still love that game! I'm just going to go ahead and get a 480 PNY SSD and use it for everything with my 240 PNY SSD, and both are XLR series, same speed, same everything except capacity. No Raid or anything, I've heard it's no good and you just run the risk of losing everything at one time. The 240 will have the OS and the few games and should have me at about 50%, which is sweet. then everything I have will be running off SSD drives. Then I'm going to back everything up with a 1TB Green, as a just in case drive. It's only like 57 dollars. Anyway, thanks for everyone's input. I really appreciate it!!!!

That's a good idea to have a back up for your storage but not just that to make sure it's100% safe If I was you I would save up and buy a external storage like a WD my book 1TB or passport drive and keep it some where safe. If you keep your HDD powered in your case and running it. it takes life off it and not just that chances it will fail. It's always safe then sorry. That's what I did. When you have over 4TB of storage and lots of Video Files. Also If you buy the exact same SDD as the first one. You can put it in Raid 0 and you have double the space. 480GB + 480GB =960GB -10GB that OS uses = 950GB That's almost a TB. This is just a idea.

Also Thank you for answer as the solution.
