What exactly is wrong with my PC?

So, I built this baby a year ago. Bought the parts online (I know i shouldn't have) but yeah. Now, recently, some weird things have been happening and I'm hoping someone can help me. I'll list everything I can so it's clear. Here it goes.
So, in mid-november 2014, all the parts arrived, and in end december, 2014, I had them built. I had a real crappy PC from 2011 or so that I borrowed a couple parts from, such as the HDD and the monitor, and the CD reader. Anyway, recently, the old HDD crapped out after corrupting my windows many times. After that, I bought a new HDD, WD Blue 1tb, and i was relieved as I thought i was out of the mess. Little did I know, soon after (couple days), it came written "AMD Catalyst Control has stopped. Please restart to --- - -- -" So I restarted my PC only to find out that it had done something with windows again, which left me at a black screen after the win8 logo. This was about my 4-5th format in 2 months. 2-3 formats on previous HDD because of windows, and one on my new one as it arrived, and one after this black screen thing happened. So, basically, my question is, what am I doing wrong? or what is happening with my components? What should I change? What is going on? I was very enthusiastic about computers as I was learning about them and gaming PCs were awesome for me, but then after this, starting over again and again and again, it's just very very troubling for me. My specs are:-
Sapphire AMD/ATI Radeon Dual-X R9 270X with Boost OC 2 GB 2 GB DDR5 Graphics Card
AMD 3.5 GHz FX 8320 8 Core Processor Black Edition
Corsair 8gb ddr3 ram
VS650 Corsair PSU 650W
Coolermaster Force 500 for 500 KKN1 Mid tower cabinet
Asus M5A78L-M/USB3 Motherboard
Coolermaster Hyper 212x cooling system.
So those are the specs. The computer's been running well for about a week after new HDD's black screen problem, and I just bought a game on steam and about 5.5GB into the download, it said "Writing disc error" and it just broke me. What is happening? The sense of not knowing is a pain for me. Not knowing what's happening and so not able to do anything about it. In a month, I'll have about $300 to spend on any components I want to buy, as I've been saving. Anyway, what's wrong? Am i just unlucky to have been hit with many bugs in a row? Are some of my components crapping out (my gaming performance is really brilliant at the moment so i'm not sure what it is)? Is my PSU causing this? This PSU is terrible, I know, maybe that's what's causing it? Or is it my GPU? My motherboard? I'd love some help. Thank you.

To rule out the gpu could you try to run of the integrated gpu for a while.

Psu might be the issue. Can you lend another one for testing? maybe from a friend or ..

Got the latest bios? The one previous to that says this

M5A78L-M/USB3 BIOS 2001
Improve system stability for FX-8320.
it's from 2014/10/24 so,if i read right,from about the time you bought the pc.The latest is from "2015/08/05" version " 2101".

Alright. I'll do that. Never updated a motherboard driver till now never knew there were any tbh haha. And yep, gonna buy a new PSU next month. Is 650W enough? Or do I need to go to 700? And what do you mean could I try to run of the integrated GPU? Didn't quite get what you mean

Updating a bios isn't the same as updating a driver. You'll need to download the right bios,it's probably in a zip file.Unpack the file and put it on an empty usb stick.Start the pc,and go into the bios, find the update tool and let it scan for the file,if it finds it let the proces take place. Do not interrupt it! Even if it takes a while leave it alone until done.

You don't even need 650watt,a good 550watt should be fine for what you have, but if you want to be sure get a psu up to 650watt. The next list is a good guideline,
http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/id-2547993/psu-tier-list.html#15349669
look at tiers 1+2. If not available or within budget will tier 3 be fine as well

The mother board has an onboard gpu,you could take the r9 270X out and work of that one, don't think gaming is possible or at best at the lowest settings, but you could see with that one if the gpu causes the problem.I don't think so but you could give it a try, just for testing purposes.

Damn, process sounds complicated as hell but sure, I'll give it a whirl later.
