what is recovery drive? can i use a external hard disk to create one?

Solution
If you have a recovery drive, you should see a message on the first screen to show up when you power up the machine as to which key to press to go into it. However, it will take the system back to the day it was installed so you'll lose all your data and settings.

There may also be a Recovery icon in the Control Panel.

If you don't want to do that, tell us what the problem is and someone will be able to guide you through the better way of fixing it.

With laptops and manufactured computers like HP, they don't give you a recovery CD for windows anymore. They sometimes have a piece of memory on the motherboard with Windows on it. When booting the computer you can press a key to do a recovery of windows go format and go back to factory specs.

Sometimes this recovery version of windows is located on a partition of the hard drive. The book that comes with the computer will advise you to burn a copy of this recovery to DVD in case the hard drive crashes and you loose it. They are cheap and don't provide DVDs anymore.

This is sometimes know as a recovery drive.
