I have a i7 3770 locked cpu and have been using it since three years ago. was wondering if its time for me to upgrade it to the new 6700k i7 ?

was wondering how much of performance difference I will get. of course that depends on the over clocking too but just comparing the stock, is it worth the 500$ upgrade?

Going to spend more than $500 most likely by the time you buy a 6700k z170 mobo that can oc well, cooler and memory. If you choose a ddr3 board you'lllbe dodging one of the best features of skylake. I'd stick with what I had unless u really need more performance

Check out some of the gaming benches were people are testing gtav and witcher3 on all generations of i7 on youtube. There is very little difference between the 3770 and 6700, its not worth it. I have a 3770 and was in same boat as you but its not worth it at all. Wait for next gen.

Looking at a few numbers , id say it is not worth the price , just the CPU alone is $500 , nevermind the motherboard and memory . It is hard to justify unless you have any use for the Z170 Chipset and features found on a new MB. I am still using Ivy Bridge and I like the CPU but i think the Z77 2 Sata 6Gb/s is behind the ball.
Gaming performance is a bit more interesting to look into rather than the typical multi-threaded benchmarks. When comparing Sandy Bridge to Skylake the gulf is not to great. Lets say an average of 25% increase across CPU benchmarks( and Im pulling numbers out of my ..hat.*) Not to say the difference is frames per second is that much greater and often not at all. However the frame time and pacing is much improved and can offer a much better over experience in games.
Not sure about y'all but i don not like stutters and jitters and any additional latency

* Note that i did look at CPU world to get a number so the 20-25% can be in some applications.
