Hello,

My pic connects to our wireless internet but has a yellow exclamation point and says either "no internet connection" or "limited connectivity". I cannot get online with it. details below.

Here are the details of my system:

  • Windows 7 64bit

    Motherboard is a Sabertooth990fx

connecting to the Internet via a Edimax n150 wifi nano usb adapter

we have time warner Internet, using an arris TG1672 router

let me know if you need more info

Here's the issue:

My PC has never been online since I got it in 2012. Last week I got the Edimax adapter and accessed the Internet for the first time with it.

All was well until I installed Bitdefender anti virus free. I had a few blue screen crashes (didn't link it to Bitdefender) and then, for other reasons uninstalled BD (using only the add/remove programs uninstall)

Then my connection to our wireless internet became spotty...working intermittently and now, not at all. I am able to connect (bars are visible, says connected) but the yellow exclamation point appears and it either says "limited connectivity" or "no internet access" even though I am obviously connect in some fashion.

Twists in the plot:

  • My laptop, my wife's laptop and my iPad have no trouble accessing the Internet through our arris router, so I don't think that's the issue.

My PC (the one with the issue) can access the Internet without an issue via the personal hotspot created by my iPad, so I don't think the Edimax adapter or my NIC is the issue.

Sometimes (not every time) Windows trouble shooter will tell me that there is "no default gateway" and, indeed, sometimes when I run an ipconfig /all, there is nothing listed for my default gateway (and sometimes there is a jumble of numbers and letters followed by what looks like a normal address)

Sometimes the connectivity to the Internet between my PC and router will come back, but I won't be able to load any webpages (though I can get ping returns from yahoo and Google in the cmd.exe)

What I've tried

  • release/renew in ipconfig

all manner of unplugging the router, waiting, rebooting my computer, etc etc

Running an uninstall tool for bit defender.

reinstalling bit defender, then uninstalling it via the uninstall tool

ensuring that my IP settings are set to "automatic"

disabling/enabling network connections and the Edimax in "Device Manager"

updating drivers for my Realtek PCIe GBE family controller (though, I'm not sure what that is)

system restore...however I didn't have one before installing bit defender....why? I don't know. the only one I have before all this started is from a year ago and it's a system IMAGE restore point....I don't want to lose my files etc. and "system image restore" sounds terribly drastic

Ok, please ask for clarification if I haven't given necessary info. I'm not a computer savvy guy, but am forced to figure stuff out in situations like this and will do all I can to help you help me!

thanks,
- Chris

Thanks Matt, I did as you suggested and turned off automatic settings under LAN settings in internet options, however, I rebooted the computer and I've still got the yellow exclamation point.

it says "connected" with all green bars full, but labels my connection as "un identified network" and it says "not internet access". And the option under Network and Sharing center to change to home network is not blue, it's black (i.e., can't click it) that has happened a few times before as well.....very random. but thank you for the idea!

Make sure that you are on the same network as the router, the network id is the 192.168.1.* portion, id will vary depending on the routers settings could be 192.168.0.*, 10.0.0.* etc. Also make sure that you are connected to the correct access point.

I just used my iPad to check on the IP address of my router as well as to get the default gateway number from it.....then I went into my PC network and sharing center and, told it to use that info rather than automatically detecting the addresses.....

however, when I just ran an ipconfig, there are a bunch of letters and symbols in front of my default gateway and DNA addresses........is that significant? when the PC is connected to the Internet via my iPads hotspot, these letters etc, are not present......ill see if I can attach an image below

Try un-install the network drivers (download the new driver before un-installing) and then re-install the drivers for your network adapter, the drivers could be messed up as you mentioned symbols in the address. Your IPv4 address should be all numbers 192.168.1.1 a IPv6 address however will be hexadecimal 2001:0db8:85a3:0000:0000:8a2e:0370:7334. Also try to do ipconfig /flushdns to reset the resolver cache. Leave your network adapter settings to DHCP enabled, so you wont have any IP conflicts.

Thanks for the suggestion....bear with my technological ineptitude: when you say "network drivers" do you mean the drivers for my nano wireless USB adapter or something else? And if something else, how would I find out what drivers I need?.....device manager, perhaps?

Well, I've continued to fiddle with this....tried your guys suggestions. The wireless began working intermittently after doing nothing....it seems agonizingly random.

I went ahead and bought a better quality usb network adapter and it's been working alright for a day.....I re-installed bitdefender for the sake of security, got another blue-death screen.....and then had a yellow exclamation point on my wireless again. A quick disconnect/reconnect fixed that and I'm posting via the problem computer right now.........its a delicate fix though, I'm still not sure if it will randomly pop up an exclamation point at any time.

Hmmm... With this problem, I went to the LAN settings and found the automatic settings already off.

And tonight was a particularly bad night - hardly getting five minutes between disconnected wifi, so I went the opposite way and turned the LAN automatic settings ON.

In 5 hours now no disconnects.

So far, so good.
