Why can I connect to the Internet with a wireless router and no modem?

I am currently in college and live in a cheap apartment. The complex I live in uses Pavlov Media for our cable and Internet, and it is terrible. But that's beside the point of this thread. I am currently hooking a wireless router directly into the Ethernet port in my wall. I've looked on the Internet and everybody says that a modem from your ISP is necessary to connect to the Internet. I was just wondering if there are issues with the current set up I have? Would a modem make my Internet faster for some reason? Sorry I am not very savvy with these things

There has to be a modem between the ISP and you. So if your current WIFI router is working, that means the building management has control of that modem, and worse news is you are sharing the bandwidth with other tenants.

A modem doesn't make anything faster, it's just a necessity box, like there got to be a transformer between the power station and you otherwise your equipment would be fed 15,000 volts.

If you are getting access to the internet w/o an ISP's modem, you probably are using the signal from a neighbor's unprotected router.

On the other hand, if you have an Ethernet connection in the wall instead of a co-ax, it sounds like the apt has a community modem and has Ethernet outlets branched out to the apts.

Sounds like you live in an apartment that provides internet access, as you have plugged the wifi router to the ethernet port in your apartment. If you are on a network like that make sure you have your router setup properly so you dont risk sharing your home network with the rest of the apartment complex.
