Hi boys and girls, I could do with your help.

im looking to upgrade my cpu from an A8 6600K.

I currently have a r9 280x which i think is being held back by the cpu. I use the PC for gaming mostly but often have music playing and other small programs in the background.

I was looking at the i5 4690K then the 6600K. I have also read that xeon is a good choice.

My budget is £300 - £350 for the cpu + motherboard and Ram if needed.

what do you guys think, im getting very confused here.

Also, is it that hard to put this stuff together and install?

Thanks a lot people

If you have an FM2+ motherboard get an Athlon X4 860K, performance should improve and it should be able to handle a R9 280. If you want to go all out, you might be able to fit a Skylake i5, 170 series motherboard plus 8GB DDR4. But I would upgrade to an Athlon X4 860K if possible, an SSD if you don't already have one and possibly more RAM.

Hi Lyonror,

A few broad strokes:

-For the best performance/ dollar right now get a Haswell CPU/Motherboard like the i5-4690K and appropriate LGA 1150 motherboard.

The Skylake builds (6600K) are great, but you pay a premium price for them right now, so if you are on a budget you can currently put together a comparable Haswell build for a little bit less money.

It isn't difficult to build your own rig, especially if you read up on it before trying it yourself. Here is a fantastic step-by-step guide from Tom's that will give you a good grounding on building a custom PC:

Edit: Here is a good video from Tom's showing you the physical installation of all the parts:

Thanks for the quick responses guys and thanks for the links glam. I recon I could do it lol

How would the athlon x4 compare to the i5 4690K in gaming performance? and how long would the athlon/ 4690K last me?

If i do go for intel i will have to change my MB so would want the cpu to last a few years or so.

I know its a bit of an ask but could some one find some good parts/prices for these kind of builds. I live in the uk.

Part of me wants to get the 6600K as its new stuff but I dont know if it A - would be worth the extra B - if i can get it in budget (as i would need the new ram and a cooler i think).

what would you guys do?

Thanks again and sorry about all the questions but im UBUR confused right now.
