R9 290 w/H80+nzxt g10 85c while gaming?

I think im haveing issues cooling the R9 290

Edit: sorry, the thermaltake controller is for the cpu, the antec controller is for the gpu(The r9 290)

I have installed

I found out the hard way the chips with metal tops cannot be directly heatsinked :/
tried booting up with them all installed and the psu would go into failsafe.
after an hour i figured it out. and installed gelid vrm heatsinks with thermal pads

So under load the back of the card feels hot, but way cooler then reference.
so i think the mini heatsinks are knocking it out of the park.

But the gpu is still as you can tell in the graphs getting very hot.
the only logical explanation is the asetek block isnt contacting the die very well.... but every time
i take the block off, the thermal paste shows it was making full contact..

I have the stuff to polish the asetek block(it currently has factory machining marks) but i'd like to wait tell the system is some what close to other peoples temps before polishing it.
That way i know its not a uneven polish job or something screwing up temps.


FYI: I have a corsair h55 and a thermaltake water 3.0 extreme on standby(havent tried them cause i assume i'll get the same results)

Solution
All I can assume from my own R9 290+G10+AIO is that you don't quite have the pump/block down EXACTLY right, with no springs or standoffs to set the pump/coldplate I found that getting the correct mounting was more than a little difficult.
Try reseating, yet again, but be very careful as to how you tighten the mounting screws/nuts: Turn them down while squeezing the pump/coldplate against the GPU die, but only just until they make contact, then tighten each, in turn, 1/4 at a time, to a total of 1-and-a-half to 2 turns.
If this doesn't work, try one of those other coolers, I got sub 60C off a stock 120mm rad AIO once its pump/coldplate was correctly secured.

you have the 290's core voltage set to +25...

that core speed should be easily attained with +0

yes, then run a benchmark like valley

if you see instability, slowly increase +1 at a time till you are stable



I strongly doubt it will cause any issues though, and I am pretty sure that is what was causing your temp issues


also i do not recommend you run "silent mode" with such a powerful and hot card

ok, tried a bunch of stuff.

Bought new thermal paste. (Gelid gc extreme)
reseated the cpu, just because.

Switched out the h80 equivalent asetek for the h55.
kinda annoyed the h55 doesnt have temp sensors. but what ev.
I care more about the core temp on the card anyways.

Also lowered the gpu voltage. it helped but wasn't the main issue,
some reason it defaults to +25.


So after everything i used valley bench with ultra settings, max aa, at 1650-1050res and reached 61c

and im steady at 63c while gaming.

fried 2 fan headers. thought i was pulling a case fan but i was actually pulling the thermaltake water3.0.
the mobo went up in smoke! I freaked and yanked the power out of the back of the comp.
looks like the headers can be repaired. and the thermaltake is still working fine. not sure what exactly happened. glad it wasnt worse.
