I'm having a hard decision between both of these motherboards as its a $17 difference in pricing. Does the Ranger offer something better than the Pro Gaming that justifies the price difference?

Both are very good mobos, it's rather common to see multiple updates to the BIOS especially here with it being a new chipset and with new (DDR4) DRAM involved. The ROG mobos will have gotten a little more early development tweaking as it's their high end line of mobos. I'd happily build on either, though I went ahead and went with the Z170 Hero and a 6600K to use for a work/testing platform

Let's see Hero has *SATA vs 4, 2 SATA express vs 1, an extra USB 3 header, better CODEC, better Ethernet chip, better power phase design 10 vs the Pro's 8, (and better components)...may be other, but those I think are the highlights

The Ranger has two more internal SATA ports and one more SATA express port. It also comes with some ASUS exclusive software like SSD secure erase and several other small perks that you may or may not want to actually use.

The Pro Gaming has a DVI video output port that the Maximus doesn't have.

Those are really the big differences. I'd personally choose the Maximus between the two.

Stay FAR AWAY from the Pro Gaming board, it is a complete and utter lemon. Look how many bios updates it has had in the last 3 months. A total of 9 and they aren't stopping any time soon. Extremely poor support from Asus on the topic, very disappointed. The Pro Gaming board is definitely poverty, where the Ranger is higher quality.
