So I looked at my task manager and added up how much memory each process was using. i got about 1,850. I then looked at the percentage which is 43%. this would mean that i have about 4.5gb of ram, which is incorrect as I have 8gb of ram. I then checked the system information and it said

Total Physical Memory: 7.98GB
Available Physical Memory 4.54GB

i believe this means i have 3.44GB ram not available. (This may account for some issues i've been having)

So is my computer not using all my ram?

CPU: i5-2320
MOBO: IPISB-VR
RAM: 8GB DDR3 (dont know speed)
GPU: R9 280
PSU: 650W PSU (i think 80+bronze)
1TB hard drive

If you take the 7.98 and subtract 43% you end up with the 4.54 you have shown as available memory, seems the system shows you have and are using the memory as it should.

no, you misunderstand. I added up the amount of memory used and got about 1.8GB. my pc says i have 4.54GB available meaning there is about 2.74GB 'available' that im just not using, AND 3.44GB that isnt 'available' (1.8+2.74+3.44=7.98)

3.5GB in use
4.3GB in standby

What is standby? because there is another one labeled free at about 200MB

Right, so the system shows you have a total of 8GB of physical memory, of this it is currently using 3.5GB for system and running applications, the rest of the memory, while available, can be in use for cached applications but still available should you start new applications / the ones you currently are running need more memory.
