Best hard drive set up with my hard drives ?

Ok, don't say get a SSD. I can't afford one atm.

But what i can do is raid with my motherboard (asus crosshair v formula z)


my dad gave me some of his old hard drives

2x hatchi 5400 rpm hardrives. 500gb

1. wd5000aaks 7200 rpm 500 gb hard drive

1 wd6400aaks 7200 rpm hard drive 640gb

1..seagate pipline hd .2 500gb hard drive.


now based on what you see. What would be the best set up to utilize all the hard drives with raid and maybe just some storage drives.


The wd6400aaks is the fastest i assume.


atm i am just using one of the hatchi hard drives and it's very slow.


Any tips and advice?





remember no ssd please. When i get the money i will get one don't worry.

I have a lot of experience using Raid.

But first i`m going to say whatever type of raid array you wish to setup.
The speed you will get is dependent on a few factors.
It is true that if you pair two mechanical hard drives together in a raid 0 array you get a slightly better read and write performance.

But it is not that great.
For example I would not pair a 5400 Rpm drive with a 7200 rpm drive, the lower drive spin speed impacts greatly on the overall read and write throughput.

I would stick with the 7200rpm drives, plus any others that have the same rpm rate ok.
The next thing is the age of the drives, older drives perform worse in a raid array.
The amount of cache each drive has on board.
And the last point of impact is the sata...

And the last point of impact is the sata port modes your motherboard can run at, along with the capability's or what each hard drive can run at in sata speed.

For example if you fitted two new mechanical Segate drives that both ran on sata 3, in a raid 0 array you will see a better speed in read and write through put with the two drives raided together.

Compared to a set of old drives paired running on a sata 2 in raid 0 mode, even at a 7200rpm spin speed.

Don`t expect super fast speeds, with two drives that are about two years old you will see about an extra 20MBps if your lucky on read and write operations.

The more drives you chain together, in theory, depending on the raid array and the mode chosen for the array you will see a slight increase in read write performance.

There about the things you need to know when you intend to raid drives together anyway.
Trial and error, and all.

striped or mirrored mode of the array can also effect the end result on the read and write performance depending on what you choose.
There are pros and cons, Data security,safe backed up storage, and how each raid mode can effect the end read and write speeds you get.

Thank you, i will attempt raid 0 on the two wd drives and use that to store my video files and maybe some data and keep the main os on the hard drive i have now.

Yes, in a way. But mostly to be able to utilize all the drives for more space.

So far i installed the two WD drives and now have about 1tb of space for video files for when i edit and import from my DSLR
