1080p for a single 390x. 4k is way too much for that, if you want playable framerates at all times.
Benefits of SLI/CF is more performance what else? Depending on the game 0 to 90 or maybe even up to 95% better performance. Depends on how well the game scales or if it's even able to make use of multi GPU setups. Which any newer game should be.
Id say SLI/CF is always worth it.
