Is my GTX 760 (EVGA 4GB SC) preventing audio editing software from performing well, graphically lag-wise, in 4K?

Okay, I'm going to try to include as much information as possible as neatly as possible. I'm thinking of upgrading to a GTX 970 (4GB FTW ACX 2.0+) because of this issue but do not want to spend ~$350 if it won't fix anything...

  • -- I'm running a Hackintosh. OS X 10.10.1 Yosemite.
-- I have an EVGA GTX 760 4GB SC. The rest of my specs are in the bottom right of my signature.
-- I had two 1080p monitors, 60Hz each, and OS X as well as all of my software ran fine without lag or anything.
-- I recently replaced one of those monitors to a 4K monitor. DVI & HDMI would only go up to 30Hz, but DisplayPort worked at 60Hz so I stuck with that.
-- So now I have a 4K 60Hz monitor hooked up via DisplayPort as well as a 1080p 60Hz monitor hooked up via DVI.
-- 4K on a 28" monitor is impossible to use since I can't read any text, so I settled for 3008 x 1692. This wasn't a random 16:9 resolution I calculated, it was an option in OS X's display settings and happened to be a perfect middle ground.
-- When looking at the monitor's menu (the one physically accessed via the monitor's buttons), it says it's actually in 4K. So it seems that OS X is actually just zooming everything to look like 3008 x 1692 but is actually pushing out 4K. Retina and stuff.
-- THE MAIN PROBLEM: Ever since I installed this new monitor, my audio editing software, Pro Tools 12, is lightly lagging when scrolling, zooming, highlighting, and trimming. The play marker is also lagging a little bit but nothing too extreme. Most importantly/most noticeable, it is heavily lagging when moving any faders/knobs while the song is playing. As far as I could tell, if the song is not playing, the faders/knobs work fine. This makes me wonder if the real-time decibel meters are the reason and are eating up a lot of GPU power or something. Just a guess.
-- Logic Pro X, a different audio editing software, works perfectly fine as far as I could tell from a minute of trying to recreate the same issues I have in Pro Tools.
-- Everything else runs smoothly, except for when I push the key, usually associated with F3, that brings up each of my currently opened programs/windows as well as showing me all of my Spaces. It's probably called the Spaces key. Anyways, it stutters when I do it, but it used to be smooth.

What have I tried?

  • -- Downloading NVIDIA Web Drivers (basically considered their OS X drivers) and using them instead of the default Apple drivers, which, by the way, always worked fine on my dual 1080p setup, even for video games (Bioshock Infinite). Didn't help.
-- Wondering if maybe I could just get an additional 760 for SLI, I tried unplugging my 1080p monitor and running only my 4K monitor. Didn't help.
-- I looked into the NVIDIA CUDA Drivers, but I couldn't find anything online about Pro Tools using CUDA, and installing any drivers on a Hackintosh is always a risk that I don't take unless I absolutely have to.

The problem is, because I'm a niche (Hackintosh) inside a niche (Pro Tools/audio editing) inside a niche (4K + 1080p dual monitors), there is nobody really having the same problem or at least they aren't asking about it.

If I have to buy a GTX 970 just to run my monitor setup, I'm fine with that, but I want to make sure it is absolutely going to fix this problem.

Solution
Well first of all you are using a MAC OS so that is your main Problem. Also if your Processor is stable enough then you should Run programs with a GTX 970 just fine!

Well you're the only person that responded, I was hoping I could get more opinions before pulling the trigger on a purchase like this.

Welp... I bought it... hopefully it fixes everything. Thank you to insanity3241 for responding. I'll keep this window open and mark your answer as the solution if the problem goes away.

For anyone with the same weird issue who possibly stumbles upon this while furiously Googling: Pro Tools didn't like the strange resolution (3008 x 1692) ... setting it to 4K fixes the issue. Setting it to 1440p fixes the issue but there's a little more lag than 4K. Setting it to 1080p would obviously fix the issue since that would bring it back to the same as before. Oh well. Now I have a new video card I guess.
