Hello,

I have been researching and looking into upgrading my PC for better FPS for gaming (Witcher 3 and Fallout 4) but I'm unsure which avenue to take.

I currently have the following:
CPU - i5 2500k
MB - ASUSTeK Computer INC. P8Z68-V LX
RAM - 8GB PC1333
Video Card - AMD HD 7850
HDD - SSD Samsung 850 Pro 250GB
Power Supply - 600W I think.

I was thinking about upgrading the CPU to i5-6600k but I just noticed that I never explored the option of overclocking the i5-2500k. Is it better to overclock the i5-2500k than to upgrade the CPU and motherboard?

I was also thinking about upgrading the video card as well hoping to spend around $200. If I don't upgrade the CPU, I might just push for a card in the $300 range.

Any help would be appreciative. Thanks.

If it was me, I'd try overclocking that i5-2500K first. They were (are) great overclocking candidates and it's still pretty much in the ballpark for current game performance. Take the money you save and buy a stronger Video card.

The i5-2500k (stock speed) is still a good CPU for playing games. Below is a CPU benchmark for the Witcher 3 and a few other games. Note that the benchmarks for Batman Arkham Asylum was before Warner Bros. pulled the game due to an overwhelming number of people complaining about severe performance issues.... and by default the game was locked at 30 FPS; you had to fiddle around with the ini file to remove that cap. I think it was re-released in September.
