Single Video Card or Multi-GPU?

So I was just curious in what the difference would be between saving up and getting a GeForce GTX 970 or saving up and getting 4 Radeon R7 240 for the same price. I know that there wouldn't be a FPS difference (or least not a noticeable one) from what I've heard, but what would the differences be if any?

Cons of multi gpu setup over single:

More likely to stutter
Diminishing returns with each card you add
Less compatible and may not even take advantage of both cards if the game doesn't support it
May require configuration per game
Higher power consumption
More heat
