I will try to this as simple as possible, yet explain as much as I can that I think will be helpful.

I have an ASUS CM5571 desktop PC running Windows 7 Home. My storage was a WD 500GB HHD. I purchased a Samsung 250GB SSD to install.

For some idiotic reason, I made a mistake on my backup. I used the Windows "backup files" instead of creating a system image. This was backed up to my external HDD. I then installed the SSD as my C:\ boot drive and planned to have to HHD as my running backup drive.

When installing the SSD, I had to use the recovery Windows 7 disc. Everything installed just fine and I was at the Windows desktop after creating and logging into my default user.

I then ran the restore from the backup I had made. The issue is that this backup restored files to another location.

If I go into Control Panel > Users, I only have (1) user account listed, the administrator account. However, if I go into C:\Users, I have (2) listed accounts. They are both titled exactly the same, except one of them has default/empty folders, and the other has the same folders but with all of my backed up files/data in them. All of this data is not what is in the currently active profile, it just appears to be saved as a folder in my Users folder?!?

At this point, I figured I would just go back into my HHD and create the system image like I had originally made the mistake of not doing. The problem is, I'm getting an error when I try to boot into that drive. I set the drive priority in bios to boot off of the HHD. When it tries to boot from that drive, I get an error. I forgot to take not of the error, but it was the one with the "x" followed by some numbers that basically says that a file is missing and instructs me to insert the Windows recovery disc and reboot, select the correct language, then "repair". I followed those steps, but when I tried to boot to the disc It would simply loop back to the error again!

What is interesting is that when I am in the C:\, which is currently running on the SSD, I can see my HHD listed as my F:\ and it is functioning properly. In fact, I can access the drive entirely.

I'm desperately trying to figure this out because I need to have some of the saved settings to transfer over to this new SSD. Settings such as my MS Office Suite credentials, along with other settings that I may not be able to re-install/re-configure as they were/are saved on the HHD.

Please let me know if there is anything I can do at this point to either clone my HHD to my SSD, or somehow access the HHD and create a system image that I can then transfer to the SSD.

Thank you!

BadAsAl - thanks for the reply. If I remove the SSD and only have HDD connected, I get the same error Windows Boot Manager error telling me to insert the Windows Installation Disc and restart to repair. When I insert the disc and restart to boot from it, I get looped to that same screen even after pressing any key to boot from disc.

I haven't tried copying the user profile as you noted, I followed the link to other links and it seems quite confusing? Is there any simplified way to do things?

I did also come across this, but I'm not sure it would be my solution: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/transfer-files-settings-from-another-computer#1TC=windows-7
