Hi Abhilashsaju,

I would highly suggest getting the 250GB SSD if you can afford it. Some people have a very difficult time keeping their operating system drive under 120GB, so having the little bit of extra space will make things much easier for you.

There isn't a speed difference between the 120GB and 250GB models. To get a speed difference in the SSD read/write times you would need to go up to a 500GB model.

Good choice with the Samsung EVO, that is a very good line of SSD's.

Samsung EVO / PRO, Crucial BX/MX lines, and Intel SSD's are all reliable and quality drives. I highly recommend the 250GB version or larger.

There's not really any real-world performance between different SSDs that you'll notice, but a huge gain from HDD to SSD.

I would also recommend bigger HDD. I would not even consider 120gb anymore. I found myself quickly running out of space and SATA ports once I got 3 of them..lol. Now I will be looking to consolidate some of my HDD's and get bigger storage drives.

I am looking at getting a 120gb SSD just to put my OS onto. What do you mean by people struggling to keep their OS under 120gb? Isn't it only like 60gb for windows 7? I'm genuinely interested, because I am on a tight budget.

You are correct, the OS itself usually only runs up to about 80G.

Where people have the trouble is that they forget to change where they save things like documents, downloads, and other media while running their smaller boot drive. As a rule of thumb you don't want to go over 90% use of an SSD drive or it starts slowing down drastically, so ideally you won't fill your 120GB past around the 100GB point.

It is certainly do-able to have a 120GB boot drive, and many Tom's users here have one. You'll just need to keep an eye on it a bit more than if you were able to get the 250GB drive.

I have the 850 evo myself, but I have the 250GB version, As many said you can easily fit your OS on the 120, but having the 250 is really worth it.

I sometimes install games I play a lot on my SSD to spead up loading times. This at least gives me the option and flexability to do with my SSD as I please, instead of feeling limited and cramped.

*Edit* If you are really on a tight budget the 120 GB is 100% more than fine for your OS.

I just go the EVO 850 500GB ssd black friday (to replace my laptops 1TB drive) ... and a USB / SATA cable with a power adapter. (some other posts indicate this may be an issue if you get one without external power - I used an Infozone USB 3.0 to SATA 6G Cable - even though my laptop only has the slower SATA interface).

I was worried about the UEFI cloning issue - and had read all these articles saying switch the BIOS to Legacy .. but when I tried this it didn't work ...
BUT to my surprise (and delight) .. after cloning (using the Migration software included on the CD which came with the drive) -and replacing the old HDD with the new SDD - the BIOS offered me an option under UEFI to select the new SSD .. no Legacy settings ... no license issues ... BOOM ... just worked.

And boy ... even on a slower SATA interface ... the speed increase was significant !! Yes - get the SSD but get the 500 GB one - the incremental cost for 1TB is not bad - if you can afford it ... but do you really need all those files ... I spent some time and found a lot of large "junk" files I had forgotten about, large downloads, etc ... so spend some time doing that - (I used WinDirStat - a free tool to graphically represent the size of files on you drive to zero in on most bang for the buck files to remove).
