Hi Renny,
It will probably work, though replacing the current WIFI card would be a serious pain. A few questions come to mind:
- Has your old card died?
- The Atheros AR5BWB222 has a throughput of 300Mb/s, is that not enough?
- Is there a reason why you don't want to use a USB Wi-Fi adapter which would be immensely easier to set-up and also avoid the possibility of breaking your warranty?
I've watched a couple youtube videos on how to replace the WiFi card on a laptop, it seems straight-forward enough, just take off the bottom panel, take off the antenna plugs, unscrew the card, pop it out and take it out, then put in the new one and screw it into place and plug in the antennas again and put the bottom panel back.
My old card hasn't died, it's just the speed isn't enough for me, I get 4 Megabytes/s (32 Megabits/s) at most and that's on a good day. But now it's just getting worse and worse. I think having the ac standard would really help me a lot since no one in my house uses the ac standard.
I only found
this Atheros AR5BWB222 since I couldn't find any other stores that had it and it's £15 more expensive than the Intel one.
I don't want to use a USB WiFi adapter because I have all 3 of my USB ports used. Also IIRC I got my laptop refurbished but I got a 3 month warranty but it has ended a long time ago and I'm always careful with electronics so "what could possibly happen" (inb4 my laptop blows up).
For anyone that's wondering here's the support email I received from Acer:
Dear *my name*,
Thank you for contacting Acer Group Technical Support.
Please be informed that you have the option of changing the factory shipped hardware/software components.
However as the manufacturer, we do not recommend to change the components, since this might cause compatibility issues and driver conflicts.
In case while accessing the internal components, if any parts gets damaged it will void the warranty.
Kindly let us know the exact purchase date and store name of the unit, when you contact us next time. This will help us to validate the warranty.
For further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us on Acer live chat by selecting the web link:
