I have a SimpleTech 160 GB how do I delete files/folders?

I keep trying to drag folds/files to the trash but I keep getting a message that says they cannot be deleted. Short of smashing the device how do I delete files?

This is one easy way to do this other options include making a linux live USB stick and booting off it to delete the files.. (linux is way easier to use than 15 years ago) www.kubutu.com or www.ubuntu.com are some of the most user friendly versions..
