I've got an old ASUS M4A785TD-M EVO 4 years ago that has always given occasional TDR errors. That's when windows decides the driver isn't responding like it should and resets the driver.
It'll usually start with brief screen flashes until either the display gets distorted with colorful noise or the driver resets and things go normal for a while.
The troubleshooting:
-I started with a GeForce 210 card, then upgraded to a 9800 GT. Still got the errors.
-I reinstalled windows a dozen times but both cards would get TDR errors several times a day (That's when Windows decides the video driver has crashed and restarts it).
-Over the years driver updates did make a huge difference in reducing the number of errors.
-I've checked voltages, they were all good.
-Also bought a new CPU, RAM and Hard drive, but didn't change anything.
Finally, I replaced the motherboard with an Intel board and am still using the 9800 GT. The errors have gone away so I suspect the error was related to the ASUS motherboard and possibly with NVIDIA cards.
The ASUS board is currently working with old hardware and it's integrated chip.
It's specs currently (made with old parts after I got the Intel board)
Windows 7 64 bit.
AMD Athlon II X2 270 Regor
Some generic 450 watt PSU
Mushkin Enhanced Silverline 2 x 4GB 1600
120 GB SSD
I'd like to get another video card (like a 730) for the ASUS board but I'm worried the TDR errors will come back.
So, would you try a different video card? Possibly an AMD card? Or do you think the motherboard has a flaw?
