Hard drive slowing down my good pc?

I just got a pretty good pc from my uncle as a gift, but it was missing a hard drive. I had to put one of my older 160 GB ones in it as a replacement. I get pretty good framerate in games, and manage to max out minecraft, tf2, and some others. unfortunately, the computer seems to lag behind on simple tasks like surfing the web and stuff... even the task bar will freeze up at times! could this be the old hard drive's fault??

specs:
i7 Quad 2.6 GHz core
4GB DDR3 ram
Nvidia Geforce GTX260 gpu

It certainly could be the drive.

A 160GB has got to be pretty old at this point and won't have the same throughput of a newer model. Are you asking for drive recommendations or just clarification that your drive could be to blame for your speed issues?

Yeah that's what I was thinking too.... I've already filled up 3 quarters of it with my stuff. :l

Uhhh... Well, I dont know. whatever has at LEAST 500 gigs in it and runs fast.

I'd recommend the Western Digital Blue 1TB drive ($50). Runs at 7200RPM, has a 64MB cache, and comes with a 2 year warranty:

It's one of the best mid-level drives available, and Western Digital has great product support in the off chance that anything goes wrong with it.

If you have a bit more money you could upgrade to the 1TB Western Digital Black Drive for $70. It is about the same speed as the Blue, but is meant for heavier use and comes with a 5 year warranty:

well are you sure that the hard drive is the problem of the computer? like, are there any other things I should check before I get a new one?

It couldn't hurt to check your CPU and graphics card usage to ensure you're not getting a bottleneck, but since the lagging is mainly centered on day-to-day usage it very much points to the hard drive. 4GB of RAM is all you need for what you are doing, so I doubt it is a memory issue.

I really doubt it's the CPU, and I know its not the gpu because it has nothing to do with videos and graphics. But just to be sure, how do I check?
Yeah, the ram isnt the problem. I normally only use 2/3 gigs of it average.
