Cleaning disk space after Windows Update Windows 7

I tried Windows Update to install updates (199 of them). It got stuck on 164 of 199. After aborting process, I used a restore point to restore the system to the point before the updates were installed. After that happened, I had 172 GB remaining (before even touching Windows Update in the first place, I had 178). Is there anyway that I can regain all the disk space I had left before because some of it is still lost even after the restore point was used (Windows Update took excess amounts of disk space and put excess amounts of fragments into the hard drive, causing the machine to run slow)?

first thing did you review each update to see if they were something you realy need ?? I don't install 'all'' there updates - some can be botched or not pertain to anything I got going on and what ever ??? so that eliminates the ''crap' ones

then you can try disk clean up and check the box for clean system files and I think id you look at the list it hads a box for clean up windows updates ...

one outher thing is the updates don't come in any kind od correct order so it maybe trying to install a update that needs another update that you may not have installed yet and it may fail to install it ..

ya, a fresh install of windows and weeding out the bulk of updates stinks -- [in windows update settings I like to set it on ''check for updates but let me decide to download and install them'' that way I can check them out first before its installed and causes a issue

I was just thinking of one that was like a 250mb just to fix the ruble dollar sign [??? ] really ?? no thanks , hide and forget and never downloaded any of the stupid upgrader to windows 10 - no thanks for damn sure on them

I run into this a lot since I frequently prep new systems for clients. There are two problem Windows 7 updates. One is for .NET, and will appear to hang with little or no disk activity for 15-30 minutes. If you leave it alone, it'll eventually complete. The second is (are) the updates which install new versions of IE. These will pop up a dialog box asking you for permission to install. The dialog frequently pops up behind the Windows Update window, and doesn't show up on your taskbar. You have to minimize Windows Update to see it, then give it permission to go ahead and install before Windows Update can continue.

After you've finished installing all the updates, start Disk Cleanup. In file explorer, highlight the C: partition, right-click it, and select Properties. Press the Disk Cleanup button.

In the lower left, there's a button that says Clean up system files. This will allow you to remove all the Windows Update installation files. Be forewarned that once you remove these files there is no way to uninstall those updates. So make damn sure your Windows installation works and is stable before you do this. In particular, you may want to uninstall any spying telemetry updates Microsoft added to Windows 7, prior to deleting this Update uninstall info.

I don't let them download to think about installing in the first place

I don't mess around with Windows Update's files. I've already ran a disk clean up software but it doesn't clear everything that took over before.

then go into windows up date [open it ] then installed updates start clicking on them and select uninstall/remove ?? uninstall all of them and start it over
pretty well said to you whats said here ??

If I used a restore point prior to deleting those files, will that get rid of the updates that I installed?

System restore will put the system back into the state it was before the updates. In that respect, they will be uninstalled.

However, the files themselves may be orphaned (have no uninstall info) and still be there taking up space. It sounds like that's what caused your problem in the first place.

If you can still undo the restore, I'd try that first. If you can't, then go ahead and try installing all the updates again. If you're lucky, the orphaned files will be overwritten by new copies that Update downloads.

Where do I go to find the orphaned files?

sounds to me like you just need to reinstall windows fresh. your going to have things screwed up before long guessing at al this [opinion]

''The component store contains all the files that are required for a Windows installation. And, any updates to those files are also held within the component store as the updates are installed.''

I see you want to ignore me on this so good luck with it - you don't seem to take the advice given as said the disk clean up should take care of them things -windows may built a file of a size to do the updates in reserve ,

if your having hard drive space issues the you need a bigger drive to handle your needs -- wow

enjoy

Would you recommend deleting the orphaned files left behind from Windows update or will that cause problems?
