I can't access my drive as well. Asked me for a password, which I never set, now I am assuming it is locked. Over 15 years worth of data on this drive, which I purchased because my PC head drive crashed.

If I initialize (as it is asking me to do in disk management) or format, is my data recoverable or an I screwed? I have project files for clients from my business as well, and I will have some very upset clients if I lose everything. These are original designs that can't just be recreated. Please help!

Welcome to the community, LadeeJ!

I'm truly sorry to hear about your WD My Passport access issues! :( I'd strongly advise you against initializing the drive as the data might be even harder to recover, if you do so! Have you tried accessing the drive using a different USB cable or a different computer? I'd suggest you to try that as well, maybe it's just your system that's having trouble recognizing the drive.
Either way it's also advisable to do a diagnostics on the drive using Data LifeGuard, so that you can check up on the health and SMART status. Here's a link to the WD software, just make sure you run both the QUICK and the EXTENDED tests: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=VG63bX

Since the files on the external HDD are so important to you, I'd advise you to turn to a professional data recovery company for assistance. Here you can find some of WD's international Data Recovery partners: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=kggi2C

In the future, I'd strongly recommend you to keep your essential data stored on at least two different locations! Having backups can protect you from a lot of data loss headaches!

Keep me posted!
