I'm putting together a 24/7 Plex server via ubuntu. It will be used to stream media to Plex clients. I'll run the OS off a SSD, however I'm lost as to what HDD to use to serve up content.

#1 priority for me is energy efficiency. The server is going to be idle 80% of the day, I want it pulling little current.
#2 priority is HDD longevity. Being a 24/7 server, I want the HDD to last.

I know WD greens are energy efficient, but this server, being online 24/7, is more like a NAS. So is red the way to go?

Any advice?

Hey there, fox3gt132!

As the other guys already mentioned, since you're going to be streaming media and it's rather a NAS storage solution, WD Red HDDs are definitely the way to go. They are specifically designed to withstand the workload of a 24/7 environment. They are also energy-efficient, just like the WD Green. However, they incorporate a special firmware (NASware 3.0) that further optimizes WD Red for NAS environments. I'd recommend you to check more of its features and specifications on our website here: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=8cLEHU

If you have more questions about it, feel free to keep us posted! :)

IF you are doing ANY kind of RAID get WD REDS or RAID designed hard drives.

If power is your issue then get the Greens but the drives DO turn off after so long so their might be some lag so i would suggest not getting them. If you want performance get Blacks, and again if you do RAID get the Reds.

I would go with green or red. Red being for raid to combine all of your drives or green for efficiency and lots of storage plus you can combine these drives too. Reds are ideal for servers though and are built for 24/7 operation but not that power efficient for idle.
