Only one hard drive at a time shows in windows.

So... I have a dying hard drive which needs replacement, i have the new drive and I installed it, originaly it failed to show in windows, so I swapped the SATA port it was using with the one hte dying drive was using, then, only the new one showed up. After that I tired like 10 different combinations of SATA ports but no matter what I did, only one drive will ever appear in windows (both appear in the BIOS no matter what). can someone explain why this is happening, and maybe how to fix it? Can post specs if needed.

Try this:

Start menu - right click computer - manage - disk management.

Can you see the new hard drive (it should be empty I assume)? Right click it and select Change drive letter and paths and follow it from there. After you've finished check my computer to see if it's visible.

-edit: I'm posting from work so I can't access these menus as it's all hidden. If you can't find disk management have a poke in the control panel.

New drive shows fine now, ive done that already, my issue is that now my OLD drive wont show up anywhere except the BIOS (and if i swap SATA ports this will reverse)

How old is your motherboard? From the sound of it you MIGHT have some defective SATA ports.

Do you have an active DVD drive that you can unplug? If you do, try plugging in the second HD to the SATA data port your DVD drive was using and see if both drives are recognized after that.

Ah, sorry.

Since you've swapped the SATA connectors around (correct me if im reading wrong, again) it may be that your old drive is no longer assigned a drive letter? If not I'm all out of ideas..!

Motherboard is an ASrock Extreme3, brand new in feb this year. Also that was my first thought, but they all appear to work as far as I cant tell, the only determining factor seems to be the combination that the two hard drive are plugged in.

What version of windows are u using? try running Windows Memory Diagnoistic.

Start > search > Windows Memory Diagnoistic.

I know it's not related but have encountered a simliar problem that worked.
