I have a Segate 3TB external drive. I purchased with Windows 10. I was able to access the drive initially. When I went to copy some files, it was not recognized. Here is what I have done so far. 1) Removed drive from case, and attached to external supply. The disk starts to spin, then I hear a sound about 5 times (guessing it is trying to access data) and then stops. 2) I checked device manager. The disk drive driver is there, and there are no yellow flag on either USB or disk drive. I have about 5 years of pictures and video on this drive, need to get the data back.
I tried reinstalling the drivers for USB and disk drive.. USB reinstalled. Disk driver said it was up to date. I am going to try it on another PC today, just to be sure. My previous PC was running Vista.. This is running Windows 10.. Also, I did setup the backup to go to this drive, so not sure if that may have caused the problem. I would appreciate any help with this.. I want to make sure to exhaust all my 'software' options, before taking it in to have the data restored. Thanks.

Welcome to the community, Ken!

This seems very unfortunate! You shouldn't have taken the HDD out of the enclosure as it voids the warranty of the drive. :(
I'd recommend you to use your HDD manufacturer's diagnostic tool to test its health and check up on the SMART status. The sound you hear could be either a shortage of power supply or internal physical damage. If it's the latter, you won't be able to fix the issue and get your photos back by yourself.
The best thing to do is to contact a professional data recovery company for assistance, as they are your best chance at getting all the data retrieved.
Using third-party software tools could potentially worsen the situation, if the damage is physical.

Hope this helps. Keep me posted with troubleshooting!
Good luck!

Thanks for the input.
The warranty has already expired for this unit. I wanted to ensure the bridge card, was not the issue.
I see in many of the forums that Windows 10 has some issues with external hard drives. Do you think that has anything to do with my problem, or do you believe it is a hardware problem?
Are there any companies you would recommend (or not recommend) for the data recovery?

Thanks,
Ken

Hey there again, Ken!

Unfortunately, I cannot recommend you any specific data recovery companies, but I'd suggest you to check your HDD manufacturer's website for such referrals or contact their customer support for that.
If you have access to another computer, running a different Windows version, I'd strongly advise you to plug the HDD there and see if it will get properly recognized. Another thing you could try on your computer is re-install the USB hub drivers using the drivers pack (that came with your motherboard) or go to the mobo manufacturer's website and download the USB drivers for your model from there. Usually when you let Windows Update do that job, it might cause a few incompatibility issues with some external devices.

Let me know how it goes! :)
