[SOLVED] How much is an old gtx 770 worth?

Hi guys, my friend is upgrading to a 980 and a 1440p monitor. I'm building a gaming pc this christmas, so was wondering what a fair price for his 770 would be. My system is going to be average, so I was going to buy an r9 380, but if it would be cheaper to buy is card used, I would do that in a heart beat.
Specs:
More than a year old, not two though.
Blower style cooler
He says that after a few hours playing dieing light, it shuts down. I reckon it is overheating. I would have no problem replacing the thermal paste.

A second question, would a waterblock for a 770 work on the same price point pascal card? Would this card last a year?

He uses it a lot though, sometimes 3 hours a day, every day. Would it be worth my money?

I live in Italy, he says he wants 100€ for it, is that more or less than what it's worth?

An r9 380 is on a great offer here, for 156€, just for a perspective. Normally a gtx 960 and an r9 380 go for about 200-250€

Thank you everyone, for all your help.

This question is more of a personal opinion kind of thing and less of something with a definite answer. That being said, in my opinion you should go with the R9 380. I myself have a 770 and love it but the R9 380 is newer, performs around the same, and is not a used card with a possible over heating problem. And to answer your second question, maybe but probably not. Future graphics card will probably have different dimensions then current or older cards.

40-50% of its current price

Ebay is terrible, because people always think their hardware is worth more than it is. I want a solid comparison, price/performance/longevity. A new r9 380 will last a lot longer than a very used gtx 770, and will perform the same. So it stands to reason it should be a lot less than 156€. So is 100€ fair?

If you look at 'sold', thats what people are willing to pay. How else do you gauge the worth of something? IF its selling for 150 and hes asking 100, thats decent of a friend. If its selling for $2 then hes taking the piss.

Nope, he knows nothing about hardware, that's the problem here, and I have no idea about last gen pricing. On ebay, someone snapped one up for 40euro, whereas another went for 225 used, which is actually more than the same card new. People are often tricked by that: top of the line, super powerfull ultra immersive gaming experience, super card **** in the description that they rarely do any other digging about (with the obvious exception of enthusiasts, I'm talking about people picking up a card to upgrade a workstation and have never built a pc before). So yeah, I hate ebay in that way, everything is so overpriced. What was the original asking price for a 770 a year ago? Does anyone know? Thanks

It's probably worth 100 Euro although the squirrel cage type fan was not as good as the twin blade fans. Also, is it a 2GB or 4GB model of 770?
A GTX960 and a GTX770 run about the same in gaming but the 770 will use more power.

Yes, the 770 and 960 are about equal, with the 770 even coming out on top in some games. I only need this card until I upgrade, so probably next year, I'll get a card with HBM memory from whoever has a better price/performance (AMD vs NVIDIA, may the fanboywars begin). Anyway, shame about that waterblock thing, that would have been cool.

It is the 2Gb model, that is why he is upgrading, he is fixated on needing more VRAM. (He's like: I can't play BF4 at 1080p because I only have 2Gb of VRAM, even though I told him a bazilion times that it is not an issue at the moment). I do not know the memory speed, clock speed or manufacturer. I am going to have a look at it in a while and will run the heaven benchmark, to get an idea about temps. Thanks for the help.

It all comes down to: will a used card last a year? I can ask him to run some tests, or run them myself, and can post some pics. It's just that I could get an SSD with the money saved, or even a few games. I think if I invested a few € in thermal paste, something I will use for my future builds as well, and gave it a good clean, it would probably be all right. What do you think? Thanks for the help by the way.

I purchased my EVGA G-SYNC Support GeForce GTX 770 DUAL SuperClocked 4GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 SLI Support Video Card 04G-P4-3774- in April, 2014 and gamed with it 6 to 8 hours daily for a year and a half until I got a GTX 970. At the time I paid $370 USD for it and it works just fine to this day. This is a card with the twin fans on it. I have a GTX 670 with the blower (squirrel cage) fan on it and it tended to run hotter than cards with propeller blade fans. I still own it and it still works just fine as well.

So you think it will be okay? I will ask him to send me some pics, and to run some benchmarks, but if it all checks out, I'll definetely get it. Even if the cooler is absolute garbage, It only needs to last me until next september (2016) because then I will probably upgrade either CPU or GPU, depending on the latest news. Okay guys, thanks, I will post the results here as soon as I get them, then I will close the thread. Thank you all.
