M5A99X evo r 2.0
FX-8350

I have never installed any new Drivers or BIOS updates to my motherboard since I built my PC.
I tried looking around and was instantly confused by the forums talking about cmos and bios flashing.

1. Could someone explain do I just install Drivers like I would for any other component in my build?

2.Also how do I go about updating BIOS?
Do I just install and restart like drivers?
or is it a bigger process and what would be the steps?

Solution
Well first off before you even consider this, are you experiencing any issues or incompatibilities? If not I would just leave it alone it is not worth the risk. Updating the BIOS is not like installing a driver your are re flashing code that was literally burned onto a chip its called firmware that's the difference between firmware and software. So if you screw this process up you can brick the motherboard which does exactly what it sounds like makes your motherboard about as useful as a brick. If you still want to do this I can walk you through the process its quite simple on our motherboard but don't blame me if you end up bricking the thing.

On the ASUS website under support section for this motherboard there is "Drivers and Tools" and it shows BIOS as one of the options. Is that a Bios update or a driver?

Mostly they just add compatibility for newer cpu's, some bug fixes, maybe stability improvements stuff like that nothing major most of the time, it wont improve performance in games or anything if that's what your looking for. I dont know who said you should update the bios when you build a pc but i dont agree i think its best to only update the bios if you have a reason to do so. First you should find out if you even have an update available you may already have the latest updates the last one came out may of 2014. Go into your bios it says it on the top or bottom of the page the newest version is rev. 2501 let me know if you cant find it and i will look.

That is a bios update that needs to be put onto a usb drive, rename the file what they tell you, put in the EZ flash port on the i/o of your motherboard, its the one under the Ethernet port with the green outline boot into the bios then go to the ez flash section. Before you try that let me know what version you have.

I don't have any compatibility issues. I just was looking to make sure my motherboard and CPU were running the right way together. I kinda just put my system together and didnt think to make sure everything was up to date or anything like that

I have BIOS 2301

You have the second newest bios revision. The only thing the newer one will do is "Enhance compatibility with some USB device" it will not make your system work any better. I would highly recommend you do not even bother updating the bios it is totally not worth you screwing something up and ruining your motherboard.

If you still feel the need to do it you can find the process and steps on page 2-12 in your motherboards manual.

I wont update the BIOS then.
So as far as keeping up to date for my motherboard is there anything I need to do?
Or does it not really work like other components in my PC?

Im not sure what you mean. Did you just upgrade an existing windows 8.1 pc? Or is this a fresh clean install? If you just did the upgrade you should still have all the drivers I mentioned if you can connect to internet and hear audio then you definitely already have the LAN and audio drivers at least.

I upgraded from windows 8.1 I haven't made any updates or installed any drivers since like early 2015. I figured out where the drivers are. I updated them now.
Thank you very much for explaining the BIOS update!
