Is this $1000 gaming/rendering PC build any good?

I'd say off the top of my head go with Mac070's build. It's in your budget and puts you
in a solid position for your next upgrades.

I prefer to see the proposed solutions immediately without chasing them to another tab
and back. cut and paste [bb] from partpicker.

What's missing? An SSD. What's there, a cheaper monitor. If you don't need a monitor then the SSD is in and that makes your system
so much more responsive complementing the i7 and the RAM and the GPU. You can change a lot of the details here but the look of the
system won't really change because you should be concentrating on CPU/GPU/MB as the central components and supporting them.

Or you could extend your build theme a bit forward:

Firstly in case of perhaps you want to improve it you may want to sli with another gtx 970??
So if you want that in future you will want more power so get a 800watt psu i think
Like fport said you will want an SSD for that sort of stuff i think.
For a monitor i use a cheap 28 inch tv haha so don't ask me about them
i would like to see a slightly better cpu cooler but intel isn't as bad for heat as AMD
other than that i think its good and you dont need more power really its only a future investment if you plan on upgrading later on you never really know how it will perform until you have it in comparison to your uses for it
case fans? will you want one or two extra haha just another thought
