AMD Athlon II X4 640 is not unlockable to 6 cores. If it was possible my secondary PC would have 6 cores instead of 4 but on to your real issue.

In run type "msconfig" without quotes and hit enter, Click on the boot tab, Click on advanced options, If the Number Of Processors is checked uncheck it and click ok then restart the system.

If the box is not checked then some one else will have to help as I'm out of ideas on what other settings in the OS will disable cores.

Hi,

firstly can you post specifications of your motherboard? Also, please can you describe *where* you're only seing '2 cores'? If it's in Windows, and you came from a single / dual core config I vaguely remember you might have to install a patch to get it to recognise the extra cores (this is assuming Windows 7).

If however your *motherboard* only recognises 2 cores then it's likely it's faulty.

Final thought, where did you hear you could unlock an Athlon 640 to a hex core?! The Phenom II X4 960T could be unlocked to 6 core (as it has turbo mode it has to be based on the 6 core Thuban die). However Phenom also had a quad core die (used from most Phenom II X4, X3 and Athlon 2 X4 and X3 processors) and a dual core die for the Phenom / Althon 2 X2 chips (note some of these were harvested quad core chips which could unlock). I've even heard of a Phenom II X 4 965 being a harvested Thuban X6, but *never* an Athlon 640?!

Thats a lie you half to have a motherboard that can unlock it i had to go to device manager and delete my cpu driver then restart before that i had to enable 1 core then lock it and go into the bios and enable it now i have 6 cores no problem.

The Athlon II X4 640 ( http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/K10/AMD-Athlon%20II%20X4%20640%20-%20ADX640WFK42GM%20(ADX640WFGMBOX).html ) Is strictly a four core CPU. I have this CPU and a motherboard that is capable of unlocking cores ( ASRock 770DE+) and it this particular CPU has no hidden/disabled cores. Some athlon x2 and X3 CPU's were able to unlocked to a 4 core CPU. Some of the Phenom II X4 B series CPU's were able to be unlocked to a 6 core CPU but this was it.

The Phenom II B series was able to do so because they were based off of the Thuban design and had 2 cores disabled because they could not pass the stress tests required to be binned as a 6 core.

The Athlon II X4 AM3 CPU's are not based off the Thuban design so they are never able to unlock to a 6 core CPU. Some Athlon x2 and x3 CPU's are able to be unlocked to a 4 core because they are all based off of the Propus design and have 4 cores to start with. Like the Phenom II B series CPU's the Athlon II x2 and X3's have a core or two disabled for the same reason of they could not pass the stress test to become a full 4 core CPU.

The Athlon II X4 640 3.0GHz AM3 Propus CPU (link given above) is NOT able to be unlocked to a 6 core CPU. Sorry.

Many those that CPU's that are able to be unlocked often have issues remaining stable while unlocked mainly because there was a reason the cores were disabled to start with.
