Is the MSI Geforce GTX 770 Gaming Edition OC 2GB good for me?

Hi,

I have had an XFX 280x for over a year now and have had nothing but problems with it since I received it. I have tried everything and have noticed that it is gpu/driver issues. It only works with the drivers that came with the card and even so it still crashes to a vertical line screen (either brown, grey or blue) randomly which is extremely annoying...especially when playing competitive CS GO. I want to get rid of this damn card and buy a new cheap replacement that is around the same performance and is nvidia to get away from the awful AMD drivers.

Is the MSI GeForce GTX 770 Gaming Edition OC 2GB a good choice? (I will more than likely look to SLI/upgrade in the future regardless) - I will run games at 1080p via hdmi on one screen.

Store page for the card with details: https://www.overclockers.co.uk/msi-geforce-gtx-770-gaming-edition-oc-2048mb-gddr5-pci-express-graphics-card-gx-202-ms.html

Thank You

GPU - XFX R9 280x

PSU: 600W Corsair Bronze 80+ semi modular

Thank You for the reply. This may be a good idea! I just realised that the card I looked at has 1GB less vram and i'm probably better going for a 4GB 960 right? How does the 960 compare in performance terms to the 770 and the 280x?

960 is slower than both the 770 and 280x

It's not so much of a big upgrade i'm looking for but one that is on par in terms of performance with my 280x. The 770 OC is pretty much the same in performance tests etc but my only problem is the 1GB less vram than the 280x. Are there any cards that are 3GB vram or more with a similar price to the 770 OC? (£140). - I always play in 1080p on my TV screen on ultra settings.

Thanks! Oh boy..is that Overclockers own brand? It looks ugly and unreliable but I don't really care about the looks of the card! This may be a good choice. How does this 4gb version compare to the msi 2gb oc version? :)

The MSI Lightning is a faster card for sure, but it depends if you find 2gb a limit or not. Yeah looks like a random make, but ocuk have very good customer service, it should work just fine.

I would really spend the extra £50-60 and go for the 780 3gb (which is what I did, got the 780 lightning for £185 from ocuk, but sold out now). This will at least be an upgrade for you and will run games @ 1080p for years to come.

Yeah it comes with a 2 year warranty too so should be fine regardless of brand! Maybe the OcUK 770 might be better just now if I get another card at Christmas and SLI them? That way as well I'd have guaranteed 4GB vram which is more future proof than the 3GB Vram of the 780.

Yeah the 4gb 770s are a good option if you choose to go SLI.

However, come christmas you may find 4gb 770s hard to find brand new, as they are getting quite rare now.

I think I may order the OcUK 770 today and SLI within a year or so. I mean I mostly play CSGO and Payday 2 etc anyways which are obviously older games. I believe the 770 is Nvidia's take on a 280x, is this true? and according to gpu boss the 770 is better than the 280x. So if this is true then the OcUK 770 would in fact be an upgrade to my XFX 280x..especially in vram.

Yeah exactly, the 770 competed with the 280x.

It seems to be game dependant between the cards but more or less the same, give or take a few fps that is unnoticeable really. I think I will go for the plan of order the OcUK 770 just now and then get another further down the line. This will be a pretty powerful setup at a good price! It's good enough on it's own for current gen games but two of them will be more than enough for games further down the line (at ultra 1080p). I'm sure two 770s in SLI is more powerful than a Titan in fact.

I just seen what you said about the 770s and Christmas just now but I have already ordered the OcUK 770 and it will be here tomorrow! Just gotta hope they still sell this card in 2 months time. (I could ask Overclockers.co.uk when the 770 will be discontinued or I could get my parents to buy it in advance and hold it for Christmas) Always a workaround! :) but the 770s in SLI will be beastly anyways and the 4GB of vram will see me through for a few years for sure. Should be good replacements for that unreliable 280x.
