New build won't turn on despite green light on Mobo

Hi Gang,

I just built my first PC, did a heap of research into all of the components and put it together fairly smoothly.
However, now that it's all plugged in and turned on, the computer itself won't boot up.
I've followed the troubleshooting guide available on here, but to no avail, and I've been unable to find a solution in any of the similar topics.

My build is -

i5 4690
Asus H170 Plus D3 Motherboard
Radeon R9 380 Gaming 4GB
2x4 gigs of RAM
EVGA SUPERNOVA G1 Gold 650 W PSU

A couple of issues stand out to me -
1) The 4690 is not listed as compatible with my Asus Mobo
2) Possibly an issue with the PSU? I know about the paperclip test, but the wires are covered so I'm not sure how to identify which ones to stick the paperclip in
3) Could be an issue with the case's power button - my case (Fractal Design Core 3000) is missing a couple of the potential cords for the system panel connectors, such as the speaker one and a power led - I think the pins are all in the right place however

From this I can think of a couple of solutions-

1) Buy a new motherboard - Expensive, especially given that I'm on a budget. Would want be sure that this was a symptom of an incompatible motherboard/cpu before investing
2) There is no second solution, I'm at my wit's end here and I'm getting more and more frustrated.

I've unplugged and replugged everything already.
Can anyone think of any solutions to my problem before I go mad? Will uninstalling and reinstalling the motherboard do anything?
Sorry about the wall of text.
Thanks!

That board is made for your cpu so it will work fine.... There are certain spots a motherboard is designed to contact a CPU this is in the socket. The CPU u have is a lga 1150 the board is a lga 1151 has 1 more pin on the board and they are in drastically different spots... Google haswell vs skylake socket and look at bottoms of processor if you want. If that board touched the CPU anywhere it didn't need to be you may have destroyed the CPU.... It is however more likely you bent a pin on the board (nearly guaranteed) and it no longer functions

Oh dear god you have put a cpu in the wrong socket most likely you have damaged both the CPU and board... You need a z97/h97/z87/h87/b87 of 85 type of board for that processor, buy one and pray you didn't brick your cpu.... That or buy a 6600(non k) 6500 or 6400 i5 that will fit your board and hope the board isn't bricked

Sorry can you explain this? What do you mean by socket in this context? I'll buy this http://www.austin.net.au/catalog/product/view/id/269099/s/msi-h97m-gaming-3-motherboard/, but how might I have caused lasting damage to my CPU?

No That CPU does not fit that motherboard. Socket 1151 vs. 1150

I assume you mean my original motherboard rather than the H97 I'm going to purchase?
