Copying a game from steam into a usb, and installing it onto another computer

I asked my friend to goto log into my steam libary and download fallout new vegas for me, and give it to me on a usb. When i copied it into my computer, and open new vegas on steam, it says update needed.( i put the file into the folder into the common folder with all the other games.)

I told him to give it to me on a usb because i have limited bandwidth. )

well you get that steam client that will ping the game and check these things and may see unauthorized install and black flag you and your buddy if its his steam account ?? update needed ?? more like sees something's up

this is why you accept there terms and why pirating is more poplar then ever

So, if you copy the folder from his to your steamapps/common folder, sometimes a few more files will have to download. It depends on the game. I did that with team fortress 2 once and it acted as if the entire game had to download, but then jumped to 99% 10-20 minutes in.
A better way to do this would to use steam's game backup. Do a little research on that and try it out. Back it up to the usb, then restore games from backup on the other computer.

Steam lets people share games when their owner isn't playing anything. It also doesn't let you run a game just for having it installed. I don't think anybody is getting flagged here.

ok I guess it depends if its his account or your account is how I read it and the game is not installed under that [his to yours]

You can not gift games that were previously purchased on your Steam account to friends. Once you purchased it for your account, they are not transferable. A lot of people are speaking to the legality of the issue, which is important.Jul 9, 2010
