Novice wanting to know if i can overclock my CPU. I have a
-ASUS P8B75-M LX motherboard
-Intel i5 2500K @ 3.3GHz
-8GB DDR3 RAM
-Stock CPU cooler

My question is can i overclock this CPU? If so what to? And how safe is this to do?

Many thanks!

Solution
You cannot Overclock on the B75 chipset, unfortunately. Usually H or B chipsets are the cheaper solutions, having poor power delivery for Overclocking needs . You need a Z75 board, in order to OC safely.

You have the k version of the CPU , so you can try BCLK Overclocking. This type of OC will allow you to increase only the multiplier , without touching the FSB or memory clock. The B75 is limited so you can increase your multiplier a little , but you won't get significant performance increase.

Depends how good of a cooler you want. If you want a good air cooler, as low as $25 with the Evo 212:

If you go liquid, you are looking at minimum $60 up to well over $100.

The better cooler you get, the harder you can push your CPU and not hit temp ceilings. Temp is the #1 enemy when OCing.

It's very difficult to estimate this, as every system OCs differently. It involves a lot of trial and error before you find the "sweet spot". If I were to take a complete guess, I'd say 4.5 would be a reachable goal when you find the voltage sweet spot. Your CPU is already rated for 3.7 turbo. If you have additional case fans, the extra air flow will make a difference as well.

do you think that a novice like myself would be able to do this without frying the CPU. If i was to add the 212 evo to replace the stock fan?

As long as you don't modify the shut down safety settings, absolutely. Your computer is default set to just shut down when temps get too high (somewhere between 60-70C). I am by no means an expert when it comes to this, but I got my AMD from 3.2 up to 3.8 after some testing. Just do lots of research as to what voltage and multiplier other individuals with the same CPU are running. This will give you a good fundamental starting point which you can increase/decrease in small increments from there.

i have been doing some research and i can not see many people who have overclocked with my motherboard but a lot have with the Asus P8P67, is this a compatibility reasoning? sounds like all reasons for me trying though as it improves my performance

You will need to up the CPU voltage, and you do so by you own risk - to much could very well kill the cpu. I dont recall the default voltage, but i am running around 1.4V with my 2500k.

I would go higher then 70C on my CPU, but i also got the money to repalce it if i burn it ;) But the chance to burn a CPU only by temp is very low, as the CPU will shutdown, and lower the clock speed if it get to hot - so you should keep an eye on this, but dont worry to much. I have see laptops at above 90C, The CPU was running on thermal throttle and did not die. So really the only think you should really be carefull with is CPU voltage.

This is only my opinion

The voltage the CPU ues is made by the motherboard itself, so the m-axt version could have a weak CPU voltage line, but it is hard to say wether this is the case

i have read that 'i don't think the B75 chipset supports multiplier unlocking'. Does this mean it is not possible for me to do?

If you can't unlock it, then no.

My guess from the manual is yes, but it seems that alot of people do not agree - But if you have both the motherboard and the CPU - Why dont you just try to go into bios and see what you can do?.

The reason i think that you may be able to is that the manual says:

CPU Ration:
Allows you to manually adjust the maximun non-turbo CPU ration.... And later it says: Allowss you to set the ratio between the CPU core clock and the BCLK frequency... But just have a look inside you bios, and play with the numbers, just dont save, uessless you want the setting to be applyed ;)

NOTE:
I am not sure how good a OC it will be, since most B75 motherboard are cheap, and may not have the power for the CPU.

When they say "adjust" they may be talking about underclocking. I have never messed with mico ATX boards so not that familiar with their capabilities.

Asus: allows you to set the ratio between the CPU core clock and the BCLK frequency

I suspect you are right, as there are nothing about max values of this "ratio" - Guess i got confused reading that sentence, or it may be a little misleading

Sorry, but you said BCLK? - witch is not the same as the multiplier, as i understand it the multiplier is the ration between CPU frequency and the BCLK, such that:

BLCK * multiplier = CPU frequency ---- correct me if i am wrong please!

Anyway, i am off topic sorry!
