I am going to do a used build and think the 1st gen i7s are best value for money and good enough for work and some gaming. I can get a used i7 920 for £30 or a used i7 950 for £50 which would you recommend or a better alternative?
Get whichever one you think will suit your needs, I'd get the £50 one just because I would want to spend a decent amount of money on my CPU even if it an old outdated CPU.
I will have to pass on these they use the 1366 socket and those mobos are very expensive. The search continues
That's why I said it's worth it only if the motherboard is cheap. Why not search for a newer CPU along with an inexpensive motherboard?
Thanks yea I started to look at a newer cpu but the prices start creeping up to around the £100 mark an i5 2500k is about £90 and a mothorboard for that is about £38 and the i7s go up to double that the 3xxxx are about £120 at that stage its better buying an i5 4670k new. Aiming to get cpu and motherboard for £100. The g3258 is only £50 new but its not quad core and so even the i5 750 OC is slightly ahead.
I understand your dilemma, but spending a lot of money on an old socket 1366 isn't a good investment. Overall the i5-2500K is faster than the i7-950 and the total cost, including the motherboard, should be less. £100 is a low budget.

Yes would be a bad idea. I'm thinking of buying something like this selling the cpu and upgrading and overclocking a 2500k should be more than enough hopefully. And selling the other cpu should almost cover the cost of the 2500k. Would just need to buy a new powersupply, a gpu and extra ram.
You can't overclock a 2500K on the HP motherboard included in that desktop; it isn't on the list of supported processors. If you buy it, then keep the i5-2400 and only perform the other upgrades.

You can find the list of processors in the Processor section: http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docId=c02856027
Thanks yes just realized that and the OC motherboards are about £100 anyway so by that stage its better just to buy new. Think Im going to end up buying an i5 4590 and paying more for new.
