So I was wondering about getting a 3-D printer, but I don't quite understand how they work.

So how do I tell it to print? do I have to use a certain type of software to print a object?

Whats the difference between a 10x10 and a 6x6 printer ??

Is the material used to 3-d print expensive?

Whats a good and cheap kit to assemble

if I make a model in blender/maya could I print it?

I'm still investigating myself. Not at the point of being able to recommend one.
Bottom line, do your homework on this. This is still new tech...

1. Just like a regular printer, mostly
2. Size 10x10 inches, vs 6x6 inches. The size of the thing you can make
3. It can be
4. I've been looking for one, and price pretty much tracks performance. The more expensive generally gets you better results. What is your budget?
5. Yes. There may be some conversion to do, but yes.

What are you planning to use it for? There are a number of online services that will print your thing and send it to you.
Just like Walmart printing your photos, or an online service printing your portrait on canvas.

"$200 or a bit higher" isn't going to get you much.
What ones have you seen in that price range?

Oh dang, so is there any that you would recommend?
I thought 200 would be enough, but I'm willing to go higher, 400$-500$?

Bottom line, do your homework on this. This is still new tech. Read, evaluate, etc.
Try one of the print services. Create and buy a model. See if it is as detailed as what you think it might be. Then find out what they use.
