Well I have been the victim of the ongoing scam of supplying faulty hard drives by WD. I own a Western Digital My Passport 500 GB external hard disk. One fine day it stopped being detected & in the disk management it shows the following-

When I'm trying to initialize the disk it says. "fatal davice hardware error".
The warranty has expired so replacing is out of the context & WD doesn't give a damn now.
I just want to know whether it will be worth to take this to a third party vendor for repair or there's no way to bring it back from the dead?

as far as i know its basically a laptop drive with a usb adapter inside. You could try prying it open and just connect it to a PC - maybe you got lucky and the adapter broke assuming you tried a different usb cable.

If the data on it is very important you might try replacing the PCB - if the mechanical part of the drive is ok then an identical PCB swap should help you recover your data however its a little hit and miss.
