Idk which of these components could be bad, so here is some information pertaining as to what went on with my PC before it got to the state it's in.

- Much crashing(of whole comp) when running gaming applications, usually very hardware demanding ones up until older ones(which were easy to run) started to cause crashing too

- Crashing eventually happening on idle after PC had been on a few hours or right/sometime after getting past login screen

- No signal on monitor or when booting computer up or loss of signal when restarting. After restarting, I'd have to do a whole re-boot to get the signal back or unplug and plug video cable back in and then press the power button to get signal.

Now, here are the issues I am now getting

- Computer turns on, boots for as long as 5 seconds and then restarts only to do the same after same amount of time or longer passes, or boots and stays on

Though, with both results, I've had no video signal on my monitor.. Until I took out the video card for it today. So, I now have picture, but I am running without my GPU. Yes, I have tested a few video cables with monitor. I think they both work. I tested them and the monitor on another computer, which is what I have been using. They worked fine. Monitor got signal.

Is my PSU likely going bad ? Am I getting this crashing because it's unable to power my comp + GPU anymore ? I hurried to buy a new PSU, but I'm trying to make sure I actually need it before I open it up.

EDIT:

- Yes, GPU seems to work. It gets power, as I can see it's fans spin when connected after comp is powered on

- Yes, MOBO is working.

- I think RAM and CPU are pretty much working

I think everything but GPU is in use and working fine right now.

GPU | HD 6950 1GB
CPU | i5 2500K @ 3.60
RAM | 8GB's @ 1600mhz
MOBO | GA-Z68A-D3H-B3
PSU | Hec Zephyr 750W
HDD (3)

All bought in or around 2011

Before I did buy this new PSU, I did find reviews for PSU's which were from people who said they would get crashing when playing games before they replaced their PSU.

But I don't know if their whole computers were crashing like mine.

HELP ?

"Hec Zephyr 750W"

750 watt power supply. I am wondering if it is unable to produce as much wattage after these few years.

I just bought this one,

And my old one which this thread is about,

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817339002

Would have bought again, but the other was cheaper.

Btw, is this right ?

That second pic is the closest to your power requirements. Also, I don't know if you can return your power supply but going too big on the power supply is a common mistake. Power supply are meant to work to be efficient. I've got a Corsair 750HX I've got a 3570k 8gb of ram and sli gtx 760s and I've got room still. I would suggest a 500-600 watt power supply to save power and to have your power supply last longer.

I can. I haven't opened it up yet. But the reason I bought a 750W'r then was because I hoped to eventually crossfire. Or get something like a GTX 590 when it was THE card to get for gaming. I guess I didn't really consider power consumption this time. I still wanna upgrade sometime in the next year or two.

Fallout 4 be comin' out. :)

Fallout 4 is the reason I went to SLI just yesterday :D

If your gonna go Crossfire you might want a 850 watt as AMD cards tend to use a lot more power.
Other than that a 600 watt or even 500 watt would be great for a single video card.

It will save you in the long run on your power consumption.

Make sure not to cheap out though. I like Corsair's power supplies myself. Never bought anything else actually, but thats because they've never failed me :)

The new 7 series cards actually use about 30-40 % less power, so I think could get two 7970's in crossfire with this guy, as opposed to stretching with two 6950's.

I don't have a reference 6950, so the model I have uses more power..

So, do you think it is my PSU ?

I would start with your PSU, Then move on to your video card. It's either one of those. Could be your GPU overheated.

But I would bank my money on a PSU failure.

Maybe see if you can borrow a GPU from someone or get like a shitty gpu off of Craigslist and plug that in and see if your system still messes up. If it still is cranky then throw a new PSU at it.

Well, I have an old 8600 GT I could test, I guess, but I don't see how this would really help. It's an old, but still-working card. Power requirement surely very low.

Calculated.

Either that card is now going bad, or I dunno. Red pixels on screen with received display from 8600 GT. Also had to power cycle monitor to get/restore display after comp booted up.

Strange, I would replace your power supply first then go with your Video card.

Corsair makes great power supplies.

I would see if you can get a HX series power supply by corsair. They are worth the cash.

Already bought a new one. So, you think I should keep it given how old my other is ?
