Can I overclock on a MSI 970 Gaming with AMD FX-8350?

I have asked a similar question about compadibility and now I want to know if I could overclock due to PCPartPicker's note: Some AMD 970 chipset motherboards may need a BIOS update prior to using Vishera CPUs.

My Specs: FX-8350, MSI 970 GAMING, Corsair Vengeance LP 8gb, GTX 960 2gb.

That CPU should function perfectly fine on that motherboard out of the box, you don't need to update the bios.

Start with overclocking the CPU first, if you have the cooler to do so.
The CPU is going to be a bottleneck in CPU heavy games.

I'd try and shoot for a 4.5ghz OC.

it means you need to upgrade the bios before the 8350 can function correctly, in some cases it wont even boot until you do so


overclocking a gpu your power supply, and the cooler on the card itself matters


overclocking your cpu what matters is your cpu cooler + motherboard power phases + motherboard cooling

The Gaming is one of the few 970 chipset motherboards that can overclock a FX 8350. The note has to do with the BIOS. The 970 is an older chipset and the on-board BIOS may not support the FX8350. Any new board made in the last year or so and from a major retailer should have the correct BIOS. You can check on the manufacturer's site too.
