Hi,
I use my ssd as boot drive and my hdd for storage. I set the hdd sleep option on from power options because it makes too much noise, i don't wanna hear it when i'm not using it. My problem is when i shut down windows the second drive becomes active for a second just before the power goes off. It delays the shutdown process and i fear that these instant on/offs hurts the mech. drive. Is there a way to not to activate the hdd or is it inevitable?

The spinup-spindown cycles aren't going to damage the drive, at least not unless they're in very large numbers.

It probably needs to spin up the drive to cleanly unmount it.

You could try mounting and unmounting the drive only when you need it, though this could be a bit of a pain. Windows doesn't include GUI controls for internal drives, though you should be able to set up shortcuts to do it. See here (note: I haven't tested this).
