How about playing games in 1080p on a 4K monitor?

I have a GTX 960 4GB. And I am planing to purchase a 4K monitor (dell P2715q). I know that 960 is not capable of running games smooth on 4K resolution, yet is capable in 1080p. I am wondering about the differences between gaming 1080p on a 4K monitor and 1080p on a 1080p monitor. (Both are 27 inches.) Thanks.

Solution
I have a 40" 4k TV than can do true 1080p 130hz so igame on that and sitti g where I do I don't notice any blocky pixels. The scaler in the screen will do as I said. Just make 4 pixels for 1. Now if I try to run 1440p it looks horrible becuase its not an easy diviser.

No, point it would actually look worse on a 4K monitor than on a 1080p monitor, first upgrade your GPU which would be around $600, then get a 4K monitor, getting a 4K monitor and pairing it with a GTX 960 is a stupid idea IMHO

1080p on a 4K doesn't look bad. It's an easy 4x the pixel count, so every pixel simply gets multiplied by 4. At 27", the PPI are extremely high, so you'll hard even notice. And with a 4K screen, you can still watch movies and youtube videos and other 4K sources, that I might add, look amazing in 4K.

Why do you say worse? Any further explanations? Thanks.

Yeah I agree with you. But I am not pretty sure if the size of 4 pixels on 4K monitor is the same as 1 pixel on 1080p monitor. I think the pixel pitch should be taken into account.

You should maybe ask yourself why you are spending money on an upgraded monitor to run it at the same resolution as your old monitor. Just to have one?

I will use the 4K monitor for other tasks, like web browsing, text editing, etc. as a retina display (200% scaling). But for gaming I just cannot afford $600+ cards.

I think that is because 720p to 1080p is not integer scaling, every pixel should be recolored. But 1080p vs 4K is just double in height and width.

The image for games would be re scaled due to the large pixel density.

I totally understand what your saying.

At the moment you cant afford a new GPU but you can afford a new monitor.

This obviously isnt super strict for gaming.

You can probably still play some more popular titles like league of legends in 4k

I would totally go for the monitor, suffer for a little while with 1080p then go and buy a second 960 4gb or replace your 960 with a 970 or 980 eventually.

Yeah thank you for your understanding. I am just asking if there will be any visual difference between the two cases (1080p on 4K vs. 1080p on 1080p)

There will be but It wont be that bad. You will only really notice it because your coming from a 4k resolution. Its definitely playable and it will still look good :)
