Hi Guys,

I'm after a new router to use with my Fibre VDSL connection (BT Infinity UK)

I would like to use the router for VPN, USB file sharing, Remote access. I would prefer usb 3.0

I don't mind flashing DD-WRT if i have to.

I need a dual band router with pretty good wifi coverage.

Some of the routers I have looked at:

1. Asus RT-AC68U

2. Draytek

3. TP-Link

The asus looks the best but is expensive i may buy a 2nd hand unit if i get it for £100 or less. What router would be best without breaking the bank too much also?

Thank You

Add the high-end Netgear routers to your list. R6400 and up. They come with VPN (both client and server - you want server if you want remote access), and a USB 3.0 port you can plug a HDD into for shared files.

I'm reluctant to recommend the Asus RT-ACxx because I've used 2 of them and both had problems with the 2.4 GHz band. The 2.4 GHz guest networks worked fine. But the 2.4 private network constantly had problems maintaining speed and would drop connections. If you do get the Asus, download and install the Merlin firmware. It's a modification of the default firmware which adds a few features (like OpenVPN support if you prefer that as your VPN software). It doesn't modify the radio though, so the 2.4 GHz problem persists...

I've used a couple TP-Links as well and they are OK. Their range hasn't been that great though, and their firmware is a lot more limited. Definitely a good candidate for flashing to DD-WRT.

Edit: Also, "Fibre VDSL" is an oxymoron. VDSL is a DSL protocol over copper phone lines. They probably run fiber to a central office or a node in your neighborhood, but the connection to your house is still over copper lines running VDSL.
