im trying to decide over the fx-8320 and the i3-4370. the i3 is better in single threaded, and the fx in multi threaded. Sooooo, what are some multi/single threaded games?

Solution

There haven't been any single-threaded games since the early days of CP/M & DOS. Now, you may not SCALE beyond a single CPU core, but even in the VGA graphics days, games used a couple threads.

As for the OP, between the two, the FX is probably better, but going with an i5 for about the same price is probably a better option.

You can't generically call an app mulithreaded because you aren't talking 1-core vs 8-core with the i3 and the fx it's more like 4-thread vs 8-thread. Most games will not utilize more that 4 threads in general the i3 will be better off for gaming

In a gaming build, you typically start with your video card and build your system around it. The video card drives your gaming performance, and is most dependent upon settings and resolution.

General Rule of Thumb: AMD builds typically allow more cash to be put toward your video card.

Check out the New Egg combo deals for discount packages --- freeing up more cash for your video card (or as a bonus, an SSD).

i have a 280x. trying to decide a cpu :(

AMD FX-6350
Gigabyte GA-970A-UD3P
8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1866
Combo Deal: $242

All types of combo deals with the GA-970A-UD3P starting under $200.

I got a 8703 graphics score on FireStrike with a similar build --- using a CM T4 cooler and a VaporX R9 280X . . .

NewEgg cut the price $20 last night and added a $10 rebate on the FX-6350/GA-970A-UD3P combo listed above. (It's always good to get NewEgg E-Blast email alerts :) )

The FX-8350-GA-970A-UD3P combo deal (no RAMs) is $234 with $10 rebate which brings the *threads* debate back to the forefront. The FX-6350 / FX-8350 typically score within 1-2FPS of each other at base clocks --- but I suspect the FX-6350 will OC 2- to 300GHz higher at lower volts because of the disabled cores.
