How much can I overclock my r9 390 on Air cooling?

I had overclocked my r9 390 to a core clock of 1090mhz and memory clock if 1640 using MSI afterburner
but after I increased the memory clock to 1650 my gpu crashed during FireStrike test

That's something only testing it will tell you, every chip/card is different, some can take more, some less. Just slowly up your settings until the temps start to get bad and/or it becomes unstable, then back off one step, and there you are.

When overclocking graphics cards, overclock the core first until you hit your maximum stable overclock. Note that core clock and then return it to default. Then overclock the memory to it's maximum stable value and note it. In most cases you are going to get most of your performance boost from the core overclock. So start with the maximum stable core clock and then start adding back the memory overclock (don't go for the maximum memory overclock right away) and find out where you lose stability. Roll back the memory overclock a bit and you should be at your final stable overclock.
