I am trying to repair Vista HP Pavillion Desktop computer that freezes, reboots, monitor goes black and a couple of times it blue screen however I could not see the text on it because the screen was unreadable...I have tried 4 different monitors and cables. can't reseat the video card its on the motherboard. this happens when you when you click on any application whether it is a windows app ( control panel, my computer etc) or internet explorer, adobe etc.

I could not install antispyware/malware software in normal mode however I was able to download, install and run the programs in Safe Mode. (Malwarebytes, SuperAntiSpyware/Spybot Search and Destroy, Eset Online Scanner, Microsoft Online Scanner) they found adware, malware and a couple of trojans. the Antivirus program is Microsoft Security Esstenials. after all have been run, I booted up in normal mode. clicked on Control Panel and the system froze up. went back into safe mode and created a new admin user figuring maybe the users profile is corrupt. logged in as the new user and it still freezes, reboots, etc.

In searching through some of the questions people have posted, many have suggested to change the power options ....the power options have been set to Never turn off or go to sleep. so that is not the solution in this case.

I am at a lost as to the next step to take before i format and install vista again. which i do not have have the software to do that. . Looking for any other suggestions.

Thank you in advance for any suggestions/help that you all can provide.

well prebuilts are you buy it - you use it up till it don't work - throw it in the trash - run to Wal-Mart and buy there latest new one -repeat

wish I could say more on this - yopu could spend to replace stuff and hope its compatible prebuilts can be highly proprietary and may not accept some aftermarket parts ?? reasons why we do custom build and not prebuilts

Hi,

If you can download run programs in safe mode, it might not all be lost.

Reboot in safe mode and goto bleepingcomputer.com.

download and run jrt ==> roguekiller ==> adwcleaner. Then reboot in safe mode, and download scan with combofix as administrator.

If you get problems, run rkill beforehand

If it seems a lot of windows files looks infected, run all in one windows repair; it saved me a lot of work.

Hopefully it resolves the problems.

Else the computer is too infected and you will have to reinstall.

Good luck

well you could try a bootable copy of Linux on a pendrive or dvd to see how it reacts on it if it seems to work well on that with out major issue as you state then you could look harder at the hard drive or something loaded on the drive [ virus / incompatible program/driver , ect... ] if things seem to remain the same under Linux then look at something board wise /hardware just went kaputt .. of corse that's if that hp will accept any os beside vista??

you could start with a hard drive test program like wd data life guard or seagates seatool to see if the drive tests good to start

I ran JRT, roguekiller, adwcleaner, combofix and still the computer freezes when clicking on an application. so i did the all in one windows repair and in the process did the step for CHKDSK upon boot up and it whipped through stages 1-4 with no problem and it has been on stage file for over 12 hours. i rebooted the computer and CHKDSK started again and is stuck on Stage 5 again. Should i proceed with the rest of the all in one windows repair? Thanks

I don't think stopping disk check is recommended large drives can take a good wile but 12 hrs if its under a 1tb drive ??? hmmmmm...

kinda look at whats said here

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/326116/can-chkdsk-hang/

then the guy at the end got a new drive but cloned the old drive to it ?? now did he not think that transferred any issues over to the new drive ??

or is something wrong with the board / sata /ide ports ribben/cable ??

chipset gone or going bad ??

see if it was me and you got another computer and say your issue drive is a wd I would get the wd life guard on the working computer then hook up the issue drive like a storage drive and run the wd lifeguard test on it independently

as I said you can for free burn a copy of bootable Linux to a dvd and boot to it to see how it works out [easy to do ] '' The liveDVD is then bootable and provides a
fully-functional operating system which you can try without affecting your PC.''

Oh man... i cannot get out of the chkdsk process. when i reboot the computer i have tried:
1) When the screen comes up saying that it will run chkdsk in x seconds, press any key to skip, i press any key however it just ignores the any key. and starts the chkdsk. and when it gets to stage 5 it stops at 23541731 of 97596645 free clusters.
2) boot into safe mode only and it does its thing of loading the files but then it just sits there saying please wait...... for hours, of course i can not see what it is doing however i am assuming it is doing the chkdsk.
3) i ran the HP diagnostic program and it said everything passed. no failures.

i just decided to reboot, press f8 and go into last known good configuration and it did some stuff and now i can log in... yeah... now on to figuring out why the system freezes when I click on programs in normal mode but not safe mode.. mostly windows programs (control panel, explorer....)

if i can't figure it out by tomorrow night I will just give the pc back to the user and tell him to get his stuff off of it and buy a new computer.

just be sure anything you install is for vista like AMD don't support vista for some time now like there last vista vid card driver was the 13.12 so ???

I still use vista and it work good but got to look everything over as far as support of it today most venders feel if you don't run the latest stuff they just don't want to support it [reasons why I went intel/NVidia from amd ]
